Kerry's New Year Katfight

EXCLUSIVE: PARTY WITH IN-LAWS ENDS IN SCUFFLE

Kerry Katona saw the New Year in with a bang when an ugly brawl broke out at her family party, we can reveal.

The ex-Atomic Kitten invited friends and in-laws to share the New Year with her in her posh £1.3million gaff.

But the mood turned ugly after a scuffle between Kerry - who's four months' pregnant - and her mother-in-law Marilyn Croft.

And it ended with a distraught Kerry asking her mother-in-law to leave.

We're told that the pair weren't exactly best buddies before the incident and Kerry was hoping to patch up relations. A pal said: "Kerry hadn't spoken to her husband Mark's mum for ages and it's fair to say that the atmosphere between them isn't the best.

"And things got worse as the evening went on and before long they were having words.

"Marilyn began shouting at her, saying, 'Who do you think you are?' "Kerry was having a go back and then a scuffle broke out."

A camera crew from MTV - who are following Kerry around for a fly-on-the-wall show to be aired in February - captured the catfight on tape.

But Kerry, 27, asked them to leave and has begged them to erase the tape.

The source added: "The camera crew couldn't believe their luck. If they don't erase the tape, it will make great TV.

"But poor Kerry was mortified that her party had ended the way it did.

"She just wants to show the public that she's a nice person. And the thing is, none of it was her fault.

"Her family are really important to her and she thought the party was a great opportunity for them all to get together."

Her pal continued: "As you can imagine, Mark is really upset by what's happened as well. He's very close to his mum and wanted them all to get on."

Kerry's spokesman Max Clifford told us last night: "Mark's mum started arguing with her family and all Kerry tried to do was stop and defuse the situation.

"She then started on Kerry who said that if she feels that way about her, she should leave the house."

It's not the greatest of starts to 2008 for Kerry, whose two eldest children Molly, six, and Lilly, four, are currently in Ireland with ex-hubby Brian McFadden.

She was hoping to have a better year than the last in which she was the victim of an armed robbery at her home in Wilmslow, Cheshire, and then struggled to pay a £200,000 bill from the taxman.

The pal added: "It was the last way she wanted 2008 to start but she's been through worse in the past."

That's the spirit...

Cable girl

For those not already emotionally exhausted by the travails suffered by the vibrantly orange heroine of Totally Jodie Marsh: Peacock Pulls Out (synopsis: was her marriage to Matt an MTV stunt? Well what do you think?), there followed the opening episodes of the channel's latest reality show Kerry Katona: Crazy in Love. This has been trailed with equally ker-azy shots of Kerry in a straitjacket - because she has, as she puts it, "got bipolar". Splendid.
The two episodes follow Kerry though a photoshoot, an interview with Jonathan Ross and many, many bouts of farting. "I could force one out now," she says in the bath. "D'you want me to?" It is a tribute to the quality of the rest of the programme that, even if she'd followed through, it would still have radically improved the viewer experience.

What makes the series quantifiably worse than anything before it is that Kerry is so clearly, nakedly unhappy. Beneath the high-octane gobbiness, she is a collection of howling insecurities loosely held together by pulsing desperation. After a suicide attempt by her (according to Kerry, drug-and-alcohol-addicted) mother, she was passed around four foster homes and nine schools as a child.

Alas, a late adolescence in the limelight as an Atomic Kitten failed to mend a damaged soul and the constant willingness of those around her - including her mother, and men claiming to be her father - to sell stories to the tabloids for cash does not appear to be instilling a profound sense of peace and tranquility in her.

"Me mum loves money," says her daughter. "To get off 'er 'ead." Her tone is one of tearful explanation rather than condemnation, and her face is that of a fearful 12-year-old. It is painful to watch.

When Max Clifford turns up before the Ross interview, because, "I just think someone's got to keep an eye on you", you can't help but feel he's about 20 years too late.
