BRITAIN'S GOT TALENT (IT V1)

HOSTS: Ant and Dec

WHAT TO EXPECT: Bringing a new spin to the talent show form at, this searches for amateurs with unusual skills - anything from fire-eating to snake charming. The latter should come in handy as the judge is Mr Nasty Simon Cowell, aided and abetted by ex-Bay watch hero David Hasselhoff.

60 SECONDS: Piers Morgan

Piers Morgan was sacked as editor of the Daily Mirror for printing faked pictures of British troops abusing Iraqi soldiers. He went on to make programmes lampooning C-list celebrities before embarking on a career as one himself. His diaries, The Insider, were a huge hit and the sequel, Don't You Know Who I Am?, is out now. He's also a judge on America's Got Talent.

Will you be upset if this book isn’t such a hit as The Insider?

I don’t even contemplate the idea of failure. The Insider was No.1; this has got to be No.1 too or I’m off to Beachy Head. Every time I see Jeremy Clarkson, he taunts me that he’s had more than one No.1 book. So this has got to be No.1 too just to p*** him off.

Do you consider yourself a celebrity now?
Absolutely, double-A list. I’m cruelly unrecognised here but in America I’m a huge star.

So you won’t be making any more programmes slagging off the likes of Kate Lawler, then?
Oh no, they’re Z-listers. I reserve the right to slag off Z-listers given I’m at the top of the A-list. Becoming a celebrity hasn’t made me any more sympathetic to famous people because I realise what a bunch of whining little tossers most of them are. There’s nothing better than being a celebrity. You get endless freebies, the best tables in restaurants, upgrades from airlines and everyone treats you like you’re a god. There are a lot worse things to do than be a celebrity. I fancy doing it for the rest of my life.

Who is the worst ‘whining little tosser’?

Liz Hurley, closely followed by Hugh Grant. Kate Winslet’s pretty bad, so is Jude Law – they’ve all got £20million and won’t stop whinging. Liz Hurley’s hypocrisy is breathtaking – bleating about her privacy day in, day out for the last ten years, then selling her wedding for £2million. It’s hypocrisy on an unbelievably large scale…

What are your top interviewing tips?
Spend time with the person before you sit down, have a laugh and put them at ease. Preferably get them blind drunk, then tape them making a series of terrible indiscretions.

Becoming a celeb hasn’t made me any more sympathetic to famous people. Most of them are whining little tossers

Who was your biggest triumph?
If there’s a PR in the room, you have to engineer their disappearance so you get some juicy stuff from the interviewee. That’s what happened when I interviewed Sharon Osbourne at The Groucho Club. Her PR went to the toilet and I asked Sharon what she thought of Madonna. It was great. By the time he came back, she’d slagged off Madonna, Bryan Ferry, Mick Jagger and just about every other celebrity in the world.

Who’s been your favourite act on America’s Got Talent?

Leonid The Magnificent – a 6ft 5in Russian transvestite who claimed to be a juggler but was unbelievably bad at it. Every week, we’d try to kick him out but he’d fall on his knees and, weeping, beg us for mercy.

How do you get on with fellow judge David Hasselhoff?

There was tension at first because he thought I was ‘a tabloid w**ker’ and I thought he was a prima donna but we warmed to each other and now we’re good mates. The Hoff’s a legend, not least in his own mind. There’ll always be a bit of friction because we both think we’re the star of the show. We’ll have to see who gets the biggest trailer when the new series starts.

Have you got a hidden talent yourself?

I think all my talents are obvious – charming, good-looking, multi-skilled, able to turn my hand to most things and modest. I play the piano and sing badly when I’m drunk, too.

Do you get mobbed in America now?

Yes, I get chased down the street by adoring fans. It’s unbelievable. I like the fact England has a very healthy view of celebrities. Over here, people can’t wait to kick you in the goolies whereas in America they put you on a pedestal.

Are you doing the British version, too?
Yes, we’ve just finished the British auditions. The panel is me, Simon Cowell and Amanda Holden. The best acts included a piano-playing pig and a bloke who put hundreds of clothes pegs on his head. Those were the two best. It should be called ‘Britain’s Got Talent – And Special Needs’. America and Britain are the same in terms of talent – there’s some out there – but also share a lot of self-delusion.

Do you miss being editor of a tabloid newspaper?

tabloid newspaper? When I’m in my luxury suite in the Beverly Wilshire hotel in Beverly Hills, preparing to go by limo to my trailer on the Paramount movie lot to film America’s Got Talent, and my bodyguards race to get me a cup of English tea, I wonder: ‘Why aren’t I back in that dreary, drab tower block in Canary Wharf?’ So, yeah, I miss it.

Simon's sleepless Knights

The first Britain’s Got Talent show is almost upon us and the normally unflappable Simon Cowell is feeling the pressure.

While Simon and the team are now certain the show has what it takes to be a huge success, there were a few nervous moments before the audition process kicked in.

Says Simon, “The thing that is different about this show, which sets it apart from other things I’ve done like X Factor, is that you have absolutely no idea what you are going to get.”

When the first Britain’s Got Talent audition show airs on Saturday June 9th, you’ll soon see what he means!

From hand-shaking knife throwers to nerve-jangling opera, it’s all there, and as part of the Britain’s Got Talent grand prize is a slot on the Royal Variety Performance, it’s up to the judges to ensure the acts chosen are fit for the Queen.

“We’re really aware that we have to make the right decisions,” says Simon.

“What if we make the wrong choice? There’s a lot riding on this you know, and we have to do a good job. After all, if we put through the wrong act there goes the knighthood!”

EXCLUSIVE: PAVAPOTTY

PAUL REKINDLES LOVE OF SINGING ON TALENT SHOW ... AND NOW HE'S INTO THE FINAL

PAVAROTTI wannabe Paul Potts told how TV show Britain's Got Talent taught him to love singing again as he sailed through to the final last night.

The opera singer, 36, said: "Singing is like an old friend to me and I lost it when I was ill and had an accident in 2003.

"I haven't had any training or proper singing practice since then and just decided that I would try and go for an audition. I wasn't even confident that I would get through and now all these things are happening. It's unbelievable."

Paul scooped the biggest share of the public vote after a performance Simon Cowell described as "magic".

The Carphone Warehouse manager, who received a standing ovation from the audience for his rendition of Time To Say Goodbye, looked tearful as judge Piers Morgan said: "When we signed for this show we had a vision of finding someone doing an ordinary job, someone unassuming who quietly had this amazing talent that we could provide a platform for. You are that guy."

Paul from Port Talbot, South Wales, has become an overnight star since his audition for the ITV show was screened at the weekend.

His version of Nessun Dorma has been seen by more than a MILLION people on website YouTube and was even shown on Australian TV yesterday.

Paul first sang opera aged 28 for a karaoke when he dressed as Pavarotti. He went on to perform on Michael Barrymore's My Kind Of Music and won £8,000 which he spent on training courses in Italy.

And after spending a total of £20,000 he even got to sing in a masterclass for his idol Pavarotti. But disaster struck in 2003 when doctors discovered a benign tumour when he was being treated for appendicitis.

Days after recovering he was knocked off his bike and broke a collarbone.

Paul explained: "It meant for a couple of years instead of thinking about singing I was lying on the sofa in agony.

"Now when I go on stage my wife Julie doesn't want people to say break a leg, because I probably will. But we feel like we might have turned a corner now.

"If I was to win the £100,000 prize I would have to pay off a lot of debts. I would love singing to be all I do. It is my first love."

Paul will be joined in Sunday night's final by monkey puppeteer Damon Scott.

The hotel entertainer from Andover, Hants, scored the judges' vote over schoolboy singer Dominic Smith despite his performance being described by Cowell as a "bad ventriloquist at Butlins".

Damon, 27, and Dominic, 14, were runners up in the public vote leaving the judges to choose who would go through.

Cowell opted for the young singer but Amanda Holden chose Damon leaving Morgan with the casting vote.

Faced with the choice between an angel-voiced schoolboy and a monkey, Morgan chose the monkey.

He said: "We need variety in this show and Damon you're the man to go through."

Contestant Removed From Talent Show

Police urged TV producers to remove a contestant from a prime-time talent show because he is a sex offender, it has been reported.

Singing impressionist Richard Bates, 27, from Blackpool, was axed from ITV's Britain's Got Talent last night on advice from Lancashire Constabulary.

A spokesman would give no further details about Bates' sexual offence conviction.

But he said: "There were concerns that with him being on the programme he might be seen by his victim or the victim's family and there would be consequences from that.

"Lancashire Police spoke with the producers and suggested that it would not be in anyone's interests for him to continue with the programme."

Bates initially announced he quit the show because he injured his hand in an accident with his electric organ.

But he later told The Mirror newspaper he left because he was on the sex offenders' register.

A spokeswoman for the talent show confirmed that Bates had agreed with producers to bow out of the competition.

POTT OF GOLD

MOBILE phone salesman Paul Potts is desperate to win Britain’s Got Talent – because he’s POTT-LESS!

The 36-year-old opera singer is more than £30,000 in debt after taking out credit card after credit card to get by following a motorbike accident.

And, if he picks up the £100,000 winner’s cheque tonight, the first thing he’ll do is get himself in the black.

Speaking exclusively to the Daily Star Sunday, Paul – nicknamed Pavi by his rivals – said: “I’d love to go on safari and put some money into property but my priority is to pay off my debt.

“I had two years off sick and just lived on credit cards. It was a necessary evil but I just want to get rid of it now.”

Paul, who lives in Port Talbot, South Wales, was bullied as a child and says the only time he feels confident is when he’s singing.

But he has the full support of his wife Julie-Ann, 26. He met the insurance worker on the internet six years ago and the first time they went out he had no idea what she looked like.

The Bristol-born Pavarotti wannabe said: “We met at Swansea train station and then went ten-pin bowling. A few months later, on Christmas Eve 2001, we got engaged and then we married in 2003.”

Fellow finalist, monkey-mad puppeteer Damon Scott, has been swamped with offers from lusty female fans since wowing the judges with his quirky act.

Hotel entertainer Damon, 27, said: “I’ve got a friend looking after my MySpace site and who’s thanking everyone for their support and he’s said there’s loads of interest and people saying they’d like to meet me.

“It’s nice but at the moment all I’m concentrating on is my act. I am single so we’ll just have to wait and see how things go.”

One thing Damon won’t be doing tonight is singing.

Simon Cowell slated him for moving away from his comedy monkey act and impersonating Boyzone hunk Ronan Keating during his semi-final on Thursday night.

He said: “I can’t say exactly what my act is but it’s fair to say I’ve taken the judge’s comments on board and singing will be banned.”

Damon, who works at his parents’ hotel near Salisbury, Wiltshire, would love to launch his own muppet show.

He said: “There’s a definite gap in the market for that kind of show. “I’d love to do something like that.”

CONNIE'S A SENSATION

BRITAIN'S Got Talent sensation Connie Talbot, six, was pipped to the post by opera singer Paul Potts in last night's final.

Bookies are now giving Connie odds of 2-1 to record a No1 hit this year.

Maria Church, mum of Voice of an Angel star Charlotte, reckons Connie has what it takes to follow in her steps.

Maria, 41, said: "She is amazing and has an incredible voice for one so young."

Connie's family, of Sutton Coldfield, West Mids, discovered her amazing talent when beloved gran Violet Deeley was battling cancer.

The youngster used to sing to her in hospital and later, at Vi's funeral in 2005, she sang Somewhere Over The Rainbow - the tune that endeared her to the nation.

Mum Sharon, 38, said: "It was her gran who first told me, 'She's really good'."

Even TV Mr Nasty Simon Cowell admitted Connie had managed to bring a lump to his throat. He told her: "I am very, very proud of you, sweetheart. Not only are you a great singer - you've got guts."

He grinned later: "I thought I was allergic to kids, but she's so cute - everyone absolutely adores her."

Hot favourite Connie was beaten to the coveted top spot by opera-singing mobile phone salesman Paul "Pavapotti" Potts.

He left judge Amanda Holden in tears as he belted out Nessun Dorma to bag the biggest share of the two million public votes.

Paul, 36, from Port Talbot, south Wales, will now sing for the Queen at the Royal Variety Performance.

He gasped: "I can't believe it. This means everything to me. There are no words to describe how I feel. I am totally speechless."

Judge, TV's Piers Morgan, told him: "I can't think of anyone I would rather see perform in front of her Majesty the Queen."
