Farmer Wants a Wife
Five 1/6, Wednesday 16 September 9:00pm - 10:00pm ITV first aired this reality-dating show in 2001, but the series has skipped over the hedge to Five's paddock, where presenter Louise Redknapp now takes up the reins. The idea is still promising: each week a single farmer looking for love auditions would-be wives keen on outdoor life. Some of the candidates appear wilfully naive: "He's the man I'm looking for," declares Anna (31, from Russia) before she's even been introduced to this week's "rustic Romeo", Derek (Buckinghamshire, arable, 600 acres). When Derek narrows down the field to two possibles, the stage is set for a Mills & Barn romance where courtship becomes a series of innuendo-fuelled set pieces. When the rival "ladies" have to wallow in mud to unblock a drain, the double entendres flow like silage. It's a very easy watch but, like the participants, you may feel mucky afterwards.
