Superstar ITV1, STV, UTV, Sat 7th July 7:25pm - 8:25pm
Repeat: Today ITV1 +1, UTV1 +1 8:25pm It all started when we helped Andrew Lloyd Webber solve a problem like Maria back in 2006. Since then we’ve found him a Joseph, a Nancy, a Dorothy and an Oliver. Now he’s upping the ante and asking us to find Jesus, or rather, someone to play him alongside Melanie C, Tim Minchin and Chris Moyles in the new production of his long-running rock opera that opens at the O2 Arena in September.
Joining ALW on the casting panel at this early stage are Jason Donovan and Melanie C, plus West End casting director David Grindrod, while Amanda Holden (apparently the must-have celeb for all talent shows these days) presents and, she admits herself, behaves like a mother hen towards the young hopefuls. Tonight and tomorrow, though, we get to see the initial auditions, which took place earlier this year. The live shows – where we get our say – begin next week.
New series. Amanda Holden is the host as Andrew Lloyd Webber launches a new talent search to find a singer and actor to play the title role in a forthcoming arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar. He is helped by judges Jason Donovan and Melanie C, who will be playing Mary Magdalene in the show, which also stars Tim Minchin and Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles, as Judas and Herod respectively. The process begins with the audition tour, where Andrew meets the early hopefuls, before the top 100 face the panel.
