Susan Boyle album sets pre-order record on Amazon

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The upcoming debut album by British singing sensation Susan Boyle has become the largest global CD pre-order in the history of Amazon.com, the online retailer said on Thursday.

Boyle's album "I Dreamed a Dream" will be released on November 24 by Sony Music Entertainment. It is the first album since the dowdy 48 year-old church volunteer from Scotland took the Internet by storm with her unlikely star turn on the TV show "Britain's Got Talent" in April.

Amazon said that Boyle's album was not only the top CD pre-order in the United States, but also the biggest around the world in the 14-year history of it's web site.

Amazon declined to give their pre-order figures but said "I Dreamed a Dream" surpassed the 2008 record held by "Supermarket Fantasy" from Japanese rock band Mr. Children, 2007's "Not Too Late" by U.S. singer Norah Jones, and British group Take That's "Never Forget: The Ultimate Collection" in 2008.

"Susan's album is clearly capturing the hearts of our customers around the globe," said Craig Pape, senior manager of music at Amazon.com.

Boyle ultimately lost the final of "Britain's Got Talent" to a dance team, and she was afterward briefly admitted to a private British clinic for exhaustion.

However she was signed to a record deal by "Britain's Got Talent" and "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell and performed one track from the album -- a cover of The Rolling Stone's hit "Wild Horses" -- on "America's Got Talent" in September.

SUSAN BOYLE'S ALBUM TO GO PLATINUM

BOOKMAKERS have all but stopped taking bets on singing star Susan Boyle selling more than one million copies of her debut album before Christmas.

William Hill is offering odds of just 1/1 that the spinster, from Blackburn, West Lothian, will go platinum in less than four weeks, making the album one of the biggest selling CDs of the decade.

Boyle, 48, will be in New York tomorrow as I Dreamed A Dream is released in shops around the world, turning her into an instant millionairess.

She will go straight to the number one spot in the United States, Canada and the UK, and is expected to remain at the top of the charts until the New Year.

Speaking to GMTV this morning, the Britain’s Got Talent star said she was "touched" and "humbled" by her fans, but admitted her new-found fame was sometimes overwhelming.

She explained: "It’s quite a lot to take in and it’s a bit overwhelming at times - I’ve got to be honest here - but it’s very nice. And can I say a big thank you to those who gave me a lot of support. Thank you very much."

SUSAN BOYLE TO GO UP ON BROADWAY

SUSAN BOYLE’S amazing rise to global fame hit new heights as her name went up in lights on New York’s Broadway.

The Scottish singing sensation, Susan Boyle was left rubbing her eyes in disbelief as the news was broken by US TV host Matt Lauer, 51.

America’s new “Woman of the Year” said: “That’s awesome – thank you. It feels surreal, as if it isn’t happening.” The Britain’s Got Talent star was honoured alongside hero airline captain Chesley Sullenberger, 57, who saved 155 lives when he landed his stricken aircraft on the Hudson River in New York.

Subo Soars Into Record Books With New Album

I Dreamed A Dream shifted more than 410,000 copies - the best first week's sale for a debut album since records began.

The 48-year-old Britain's Got Talent finalist swept past JLS, Black Eyed Peas and Queen, whose latest efforts were forced to settle for second, third and fourth spots respectively.

Her cover of the Rolling Stones classic Wild Horses entered the singles charts in ninth place.

Simon Cowell who masterminded her rise from obscurity, said: "I'm incredibly proud of Susan as well as being delighted for her.

"The success could not not have happened to a lovelier person. She did it her way and made a dream come true.

The Scottish singer, 48, looked overcome with joy as she teamed up with Elaine Paige to sing the latter's hit duet I Know Him So Well.

The pairing was kept secret from Miss Boyle until shortly before the performance, which was for a TV special that charts her rise to fame this year.
