DJ Tommy Vance has been drafted in to replace Roger Cook on reality show Hell's Kitchen.

Cook was forced to drop out after he fell off a chair and injured his knee.

Vance, 63, was chosen from a list of standby contestants. He has a head start on some of the other celebrities - before becoming a DJ he worked in the catering division of the merchant navy.

The 10 celebrities got a roasting from Gordon Ramsay after a disastrous opening night.

A series of cock-ups in the kitchen meant more than half of the restaurant's customers went home hungry.

The 72-seater restaurant was packed with diners including Ramsay's wife, all of whom were expecting a three-course meal.

But 40 of them had to make do with only a starter or in some cases nothing at all as the kitchen descended into chaos.

Jennifer Ellison, Al Murray, Amanda Barrie and Dwain Chambers were on the receiving end of Ramsay's rants.

Customers Vanessa Feltz and Stephanie Beacham walked out when the wait got too much, while Neil Fox sent his starter back because it was so revolting and went to the chip shop instead.

Ramsay closed the kitchen at 11.30pm, despite the fact 40 guests were still waiting for their food.

Is it me, or is it just a dozen desperado's running around, in a blind panic, being shouted at? (not without cause). You don't actually see anything happening - nothing stands still for long enough, it's like a piece of film has been speeded up.
I keep expecting the Benny Hill girl-chasing music, to cut in. :-?

da.....da-da-da,da,da - da,da,da,da,da....da, da, da-da, da-da-da. {@} {@}

and is it really wise, to let a senile, ex-soap actress, (who's sadly going blind), let loose with a load of kitchen knives???

...a tad worrying, if you ask me. :-?

I am completely mystified as to why anyone would want to do this show, are they really that desperate for fame?
At least in "I'm a celebrity" you get to fly first class to Australia and spend 2 weeks in the jungle.

What's more disgusting is the WASTE- 38 main courses being thrown straight in the bin as they were supposedly not good enough!
At least give it to the camera operator or the production team, but to discard hundreds of pounds worth of ingredients every night is just wrong!

Had to laugh at Edwina Currie :8o: last night. Asked Tommy Vance how long he had been a chef.

"I'm not, I'm a DJ"

EC: "Oh. Who are you then?"

Bookies make Al Murray the favourite to win ITV's Hell's Kitchen reality TV show.

Ladbrokes make Murray 2/1 to survive Gordon Ramsey's swearing rages to win the show.

He's just ahead of former pop star Matt Goss at 2/1.

Ladbrokes spokesman Warren Lush said: "Gordon would agree that money doesn't talk, it swears. If that is the case then Al Murray and Matt Goss are the ones to watch.

"Dwain Chambers is yet to leave the starting block and is the 25/1 outsider."

However, Ladbrokes is offering just 4/1 that Dwain Chambers physically punches Ramsay before the end of the show.

Full odds to win: 2/1 Al Murray; 4/1 Matt Goss; 5/1 Jennifer Ellison; 6/1 Belinda Carlisle; 7/1 Abi Titmuss; 10/1 Tommy Vance; 16/1 Amanda Barrie, Edwina Currie and James Dreyfus; 25/1 Dwain Chambers.

Ladbrokes also offer just 4/1 that Dwain Chambers physically punches Ramsay and 10/1 that Ramsay's wife gets food poisoning.

Stars walk out of Hell's Kitchen

Vance (left) was only in the show 24 hours
Two contestants in the ITV reality show Hell's Kitchen, pitting celebrities against chef Gordon Ramsay, have walked out as ratings suffered a heavy drop.
DJ Tommy Vance and athlete Dwain Chambers left the show after receiving verbal abuse from the explosive chef.

Vance's agent said the former BBC Radio 1 host had left the show because he thought it was "dangerous".

Meanwhile, ratings for the Tuesday show were 5.1 million _ more than three million down from Monday's show.

Vance had only been on the show for 24 hours as a late replacement for the injured reporter Roger Cook.

"He was very tired and felt that the kitchen was a dangerous environment to be in," his agent Jon Roseman said.

"If you are tired and under stress you can either damage yourself or others because a kitchen's full of boiling water, fire and fat.

"He is not a young man and unless you are seriously trained it is very dangerous. He left to save his own finger and somebody else's."

An ITV spokeswoman said: "They have walked. They did not turn up for roll call this morning.

"Then Dwain came down in his normal clothes and just said 'I'm off, bye'. There was no big argument or anything.

"We not sure what happened with Tommy, but we are going back through the tapes," she said.

Vance, 63, is a rock DJ best-known for his 15-year run as host of the Friday Rock Show on Radio 1.

Dwain Chambers, 26, is a British runner regarded as one of the world's best sprinters before being tested positive for the banned drug THG.

The show started on Sunday. It lasts for two weeks and forces celebrities to cook for diners at a Ramsay-run restaurant.

The show has made a really strong impact and viewers are enjoying the action

ITV1 spokeswoman
The celebrity chefs are voted for by the public and the least popular will be evicted. The ten chefs had been divided into two teams.

Other celebrities taking part include former Brookside actress Jennifer Ellison, Gimme Gimme Gimme actor James Dreyfus and Coronation Street's Amanda Barrie.

An ITV spokeswoman said the ratings had taken a marked dip, but "in a show of this nature they are always fluctuating".

"The show has made a really strong impact and viewers are enjoying the action," she said.

The show had already seen Barrie and Dreyfus on the verge of quitting because of treatment from the acid-tongued Ramsay.

I'm not a big fan of chef's (my dad was one :D ), most are cantankerous a******s but this show does show how stressful working in a kitchen can be.

Having said that, Gordon Ramsay seems to just create more pressure. Must be a nightmare with the heat an all.
