ITV2 overtook arch rival Sky One in the multichannel ratings for the first time last week, boosted by the return of American Idol and repeats of movies including The Sixth Sense and Liar Liar.
The fourth series of American Idol, the US version of Pop Idol, launched on ITV2 on Friday night with 889,000 viewers tuning in for auditions featuring pop star wannabes, according to unofficial overnights.
After that show finished at 10.20pm, a second programme looking back over the third series of American Idol did even better, attracting 942,000 viewers.
