ANT and Dec have been banned from hosting their own celebrity golf show — after selling it to Sky One. Sky forked out £3million on Celebrity Cup after ITV turned it down. It will run over three days and features stars like Catherine Zeta Jones, Sylvester Stallone and Hugh Grant. But the lads’ £5million deal with ITV means they will be banned from fronting the show, produced by their Gallowgate company. Celebrity Cup will be screened over the August bank holiday weekend and feature a Ryder Cup-style contest between teams from Europe and the US. Sun |

Sky to tee off with Ant and Dec golf show ITV stars Ant and Dec have turned their backs on their employers and sold their first big production to Sky after they failed to persuade network bosses to back their idea for a multimillion pound celebrity golf show. ITV refused to commission the show even though Ant and Dec have persuaded some of the world's biggest stars, including Robbie Williams, Sylvester Stallone, Hugh Grant and Samuel L Jackson, to participate. They are expected to be joined by Hollywood A-listers, Catherine Zeta Jones, Michael Douglas and Andy Garcia. The pair, who are ITV's highest paid stars, will co-produce the Ryder Cup-style show, the Celebrity Cup, for Sky One which is to match Who Wants to be a Millionaire? and offer viewers the chance to win a £1m prize. Ant and Dec first offered the show to ITV but when they failed to strike a deal, Sky bosses swooped in - flying out to Cannes today - with an offer worth £1m more than ITV was prepared to pay. ITV said today it had decided not to go ahead with the show because a three-day golf-athon would not fit in easily in the network's schedule. Massive coup for Sky Signing up the Ant and Dec show is a massive coup for Sky One, which enjoyed a big ratings success with celebrity football series The Match at the end of last year. Ant and Dec's Gallowgate Productions will make the show with Superstars producer TWI. "We are absolutely delighted that we have managed to secure one of the biggest TV events of the year," said Sky One controller James Baker. "It's a fantastic idea and it will be a real pleasure working with Gallowgate and TWI." Ant and Dec - real names Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly - had planned to present the show for ITV, but their golden handcuffs deal with the network means they will not be able to front the show for Sky. However, the pair are expected to be closely involved in the making of the programme and could act as consultants on the show. They may also be able to take part as contestants in the celebrity golf challenge. Sky is spending around £3m on the show, which will air over three days during the August bank holiday weekend. It will feature a Ryder Cup-style contest between two teams from Europe and the US, captained by Colin Montgomerie and Mark O'Meara. The United States team will include Sylvester Stallone, Samuel L Jackson, Kyle MacLachlan, Kenny G and Sixth Sense star Haley Joel Osment. They are expected to be joined by Catherine Zeta Jones, Michael Douglas, Donald Trump and Andy Garcia. Already confirmed for the European team are Robbie Williams, Hugh Grant, Boris Becker, Sir Steve Redgrave, Ronan Keating and Chris Evans. It is also expected to include James Nesbitt, Ian Wright and Jodie Kidd. 'Celebrities aren't coming for money' Two viewers will join the celebrities on the final day of the event, at the Celtic Manor course in Wales, where Montgomerie and O'Meara will take part in a nearest the hole competition. The captain who gets nearest the hole will win one of the viewers a Caribbean holiday. If they manage a hole in one, the viewer will win £1m. "The celebrities aren't coming for the money or to sell records or anything. They're coming because they want to play golf," said a show insider. ITV today denied that Sky had gazumped them to the show. "This was never a commission from ITV," said a spokeswoman. "It is a fantastic idea and it is something we were looking at, but it is not something ITV will be pursuing." Station insiders said the show, which is likely to take up a large chunk of the schedule over the three-day bank holiday, would not have fitted easily into the ITV schedule. "It was a creative and commercial decision," said a source. "It's not a decision you come to lightly but we decided it wasn't really an ITV entertainment show." TWI head of entertainment Bob Massie said Sky One was the "perfect home" for the event. "The show promises to be one of the most exciting events of the year, appealing to golf enthusiasts and entertainment fans alike, and we're incredibly excited about the long-term prospects for the show."Mediaguardian |

CELEBRITY RYDER CUP CATHERINE Zeta Jones is to take on husband Michael Douglas in a celebrity version of golf's Ryder Cup. The Welsh actress will play for a European team and he is set to represent America, it was confirmed yesterday. And the two-day event will be screened on Ant and Dec's TV show. The Geordie presenters are golf nuts and the match was their idea. US glitterati lined up for the "All Star Cup" include actors Rob Lowe, Patrick Duffy, Cheryl Ladd and Haley Osment - as well as singer Kenny G, tennis player Michael Chang and swim great Mark Spitz. The European team includes Boris Becker, Sir Steve Redgrave, Ronan Keating, James Nesbitt, Chris Evans, Jodie Kidd and Wales rugby union player Gavin Henson. Bob Massie, boss at TWI, makers of the show, said: "Competition will be fierce. They all play to win." The Europeans will be led by Colin Montgomerie. Mark O'Meara is the Americans' non-playing captain. Catherine dropped her love of golf into the conversation when she met her husband-to-be six years ago, knowing he was also a fanatic. She recalled: "I said, 'by the way, I do play golf'. He was like: 'She plays GOLF? Thank you, God!" The squads will compete at the 2010 Ryder Cup venue, the Celtic Manor Resort in South Wales, over the August Bank Holiday. There is just one handicap - the US team has 12 golfers, one less than the Europeans. But organisers claim both teams will be par-fectly matched. Mirror |

Hollywood couple to go head-to-head in Sky golf tournament Sky One has scored a coup by signing up Catherine Zeta-Jones and her husband, Michael Douglas, on opposing sides of its celebrity version of the Ryder Cup. The All Star Cup, the brainchild of ITV stars Ant and Dec, will screen over the bank holiday and features a team of US players including actors Rob Lowe and Haley Joel Osment teeing off against a European team including TV mogul Chris Evans, Cold Feet star James Nesbitt and singer Ronan Keating. Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly created the programme and were in the process of selling it to ITV when Sky One swooped in and trumped its bid. ITV says it decided the programme was not suitable for its target audience. Colin Montgomerie will be the non-playing captain of the European team, which will include rugby international Gavin Henson, model Jodie Kidd and Olympic gold medallist Sir Steve Redgrave. The US side will be captained by Mark O'Meara, and feature Dallas star Patrick Duffy, Charlie's Angel star Cheryl Ladd and tennis star Michael Chang. The three-day event will dominate Sky One schedules over the bank holiday with the arrival of the teams and the practice day shown on Saturday before the team pairings for the opening matches are announced. The tournament will then be played over the next two days at the Celtic Manor resort in South Wales, venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup. "The players have now signed up and we are delighted with the calibre of names taking part," said Bob Massie, executive producer at TWI, which is making the programme. McPartlin and Donnelly, whose Gallowgate company is co-producing the programme, promised a "fantastic event" and said it "couldn't be more exciting". Terry Wogan, Kirsty Gallacher and Jamie Theakston will present the programme. When the programme was launched in April the original roster of stars publicised to appear included Samuel L Jackson, Sylvester Stallone, Andy Garcia and Kyle MacLachlan. The teams announced today: Team Europe Captain: Colin Montgomerie, Boris Becker, Matt Dawson, Chris Evans, Gavin Henson, Ronan Keating, Jodie Kidd, Damian Lewis, Andrew Lincoln, James Nesbitt, Sir Steve Redgrave, Peter Schmeichel, Ian Wright, Catherine Zeta Jones. Team USA Captain: Mark O'Meara, Michael Chang, Michael Douglas, Patrick Duffy, Boomer Esiason, Kenny G, Steve Hytner, Cheryl Ladd, George Lopez, Rob Lowe, Cheech Marin, Haley Osment, Mark Spitz. guardian |

CELEBRITIES GET IN THE SWING FOR CHARITY EVENT Celebrities more used to doing a turn on the red carpet are practising their swing today in preparation for a star-studded golf tournament. Jodie Kidd, Rob Lowe, Chris Evans and Gavin Henson are among the celebrities making up the two teams to be pitted against each other during the two-day event. Husband and wife, Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas will be playing on opposing sides as the Welsh beauty has been picked to represent Europe while her husband plays for the American team. Colin Montgomery is captaining the European stars while Mark O'Meara is captain of the US side. The golf legends will be coaching and supporting their teams but neither will actually be playing in the tournament which is being held on the Roman Road course at the Celtic Manor in Newport, Gwent. Saturday has been designated a practice day for the players with a red carpet gala dinner planned in the evening. The game starts on Sunday and will continue until bank holiday Monday. The teams will be be made to feel at home with luxurious suites at the Celtic Manor Hotel, the host for 2010 Ryder Cup. Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas will get the all star treatment. The hotel's most luxurious accommodation is equipped with its own grand piano, private dining room, bedrooms with en-suite marble bathrooms. The room's occupants can request butler service or even a pianist or harpist should they require a little evening entertainment. If it all gets too much the hotel spa boasts one of the country's only four seater Rasul treatment room where the celebrities could share the experience of the exclusive mud ritual treatment. Each celebrity has nominated their own charity to which they will donate any prize money and their share of the proceeds from ticket sales to the event which will be broadcast on Sky One throughout the weekend,. The Douglases have chosen local charity, the Noah's Ark appeal which raises money for Cardiff's children's hospital. The concept is the brainchild of presenters Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly who are both keen golfers. Disc jockey and Europe team member Chris Evans said he had been spending time getting to know the green in an effort to gain an advantage for the Brits. He said: "I've been here since Thursday practising on the green, its half the battle I think and it could make the difference of three or four shots." Chris, who has been playing golf since the age of 11, said all the players had some experience of the game. The former presenter who is representing the European side said he had no idea what the competition was going to be like. "I've not really seen the Americans in action yet so we need to know what their handicap is before we know what we are up against." But he promised spectators would not be short of entertainment. "The craic is fantastic, I could hear (Peter) Schmeichel and (Ian) Wright shouting at each other from two holes away and that was during practice so who knows what it will be like during the game." There will be no late nights for Mr Evans as the team are under strict training orders from their captains and coaching started at 7am. "We might have a few beers but we are staying within the confines of the hotel." But ex-wife Billie Piper, who is currently filming BBC series Doctor Who in nearby Cardiff, will be paying him a visit. "She called me on Thursday and I think she's going to come up. I don't know if she will be watching the game though, it depends if she is working or not, she might be filming." Suttonobserver |

Chris outbids rival Robbie IT WAS putters at dawn when Chris Evans and Robbie Williams fought a pitched battle at a star-studded golf event. And although he won, it left the media mogul with a huge hole in his pocket... Guests at a gala dinner for Sky One's All-Star Cup were on the edge of their seats as Chris and Robbie got engaged in a tense bidding war. And the prize being auctioned at the Celtic Manor resort in Newport, Wales, on Saturday? Tiger Woods's Masters flag and two tickets for the next Masters tournament. Our spy tells us: "It was a real battle of the egos. Chris and Robbie were being egged on by pals sitting on their tables. They were on opposite sides of the room but were calling each other's bluff. Before long the whole room was egging them on. "It was clear neither of them wanted to be outdone. They are both millionaires with cash to spare, so they were up for the challenge." The bidding, which opened at £7,000, started off friendly enough but soon became fierce. Robbie threw in the towel at £39,000, leaving Chris, 39, to collect his prize for £40,000. But if 31-year-old Robbie was teed off about losing, he hid it well. There to support his pals Ant and Dec - who came up with the idea of pitting a European team of celebrity golfers against an American one - he took his defeat on the chin and went to shake hands with Chris. He and his friend Jonathan Wilkes did leave the dinner early. But Robbie's sharpish exit probably had more to do with Corrie's Bradley Walsh than sour grapes - both men were wearing identical mauve suits. D'oh! Bradley, 45, who plays love cheat check Baldwin in the hit ITV soap, told us: "I'm flattered. Rob's young and he's learning from the best when it comes to fashion." Later, as Robbie was chatting up a blonde at the bar, party-loving Chris was busy making another huge dent in his credit card - with his bar tab. He spent an estimated £20,000 over Friday and Saturday, plying his team-mates with bubbly. One reveller says: "Chris was offering to buy drinks for everyone. He was also posing for pictures with his newly-acquired flag. He seemed very proud to have won it at auction." We're glad to see he's flying the flag for Britain in more ways than one. Mirror |

CHARLIE AND GAV HEAD OFF EARLY WE were a little surprised our favourite party girl Charlotte Church ducked off early at the gala evening to spend time with her hunky Welsh rugby star Gavin Henson. Earlier, Gavin, 23, could hardly contain his excitement about playing in the golf tournament. He told 3am: "Charlotte's coming tonight - she's my lucky charm." But the pair didn't leave to get an early night. A source tells us: "They made their excuses and headed to their hotel, got changed into jeans and got a lift back into Cardiff. They stumbled back into the hotel around 3am." Knew you wouldn't let us down, Charlotte... Mirror |

NESBITT ENJOYS SPA SESSION BEFORE GOLF JAMES Nesbitt gathered a group of pals to enjoy a pampering spa session in preparation for the gala evening. But James, 40, who brought along Hollywood star Haley Joel Osment, 17, for the treatment, enjoyed the bubbles a little too much. The Cold Feet star almost missed the red carpet line-up and had to hot foot it to the ceremony. Our source says: "James and his pals were clearly enjoying themselves but he had to make a mad dash to go and get ready at the 11th hour." Why just a spa James, surely you should have got your nails done, too. Mirror |

So did you witness the media event of the weekend? No, nothing to do with Edinburgh but Sky One's celebrity take on the Ryder Cup, the imaginatively titled All-Star Cup. It deserves some sort of award if only for managing the unlikely feat of getting Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta Jones, Chris Evans, Patrick Duffy and Kenny G on screen at the same time. Playing golf. Evans proved the star on the course (given the fate of his most recent TV efforts, perhaps he has taken it up full time), Zeta Jones less so, driving the ball at head height straight into the crowd from the tee, pole-axing an unfortunate spectator. Europe won a nail-biting (it says here) finish, and also triumphed in the drinking stakes at the bar. According to one of the US golfers, James Nesbitt consumed so much alcohol "he couldn't even say his own name". Further revelations from the 19th hole gratefully received, to the usual address please mailto:monkey@mediaguardian.co.uk Ant and Dec slip through their golden handcuffs ITV chiefs will have been watching Sky's celebrity golf with interest after they passed up the opportunity to broadcast the show, which was executive produced by their two biggest stars, Ant and Dec. The pair were not allowed to present the Sky One show because of their golden handcuffs deal with ITV, but producers cleverly got round the problem by featuring as many shots of Dec (or was it Ant?) in the crowd as possible, as well as lots of interviews with the Pop Idol pair. If you didn't know better you might almost have thought they were co-presenting it. guardian |

Diamond gift for Chris Evans' girl caddy A teenage schoolgirl who caddied in a celebrity golf tournament for DJ Chris Evans was given a £10,000 (€14,637) diamond thank-you by the star, it emerged today. Stunned Natalie Harrison, 17, initially turned down the generous gift in disbelief when Evans made the unexpected gesture. The teenager was among 20 youngsters chosen to caddy for a host of celebrities in the AllStar Cup at the Celtic Manor, Newport, over the Bank Holiday. Welsh-born Catherine Zeta Jones was pitted against husband Michael Douglas in the two-day Europe versus USA spectacular at the course. But when Evans was voted top player in the tournament on Monday he decided to present his prize of a Russian-cut diamond to the teenager. He claimed key advice given by keen-golfer Natalie, from Rhuddlan, Denbighshire, had been instrumental in his success. “I was just shocked when he said that I should have it. I turned him down at first but he insisted and said I deserved it,” said Natalie, speaking from her home today. “I gave him advice on what line to take with his putts and judged distances on the fairway for him. “I went up to his room to say goodbye at the end because my dad was waiting to drive me home and it’s a long way. “I couldn’t have been more shocked when he said what he was going to do. Then he came back down with me and said ’I’ll leave you to tell your parents’. “They were as shocked as I was but they went over and thanked him at once.” She said that Evans had taken the button-sized diamond and was having it set in a necklace for her. As a member of her local village club she has played golf since the age of four and recently won the club’s ladies title. Now she is waiting to restart her A-Level studies next week at school and is planning a party with friends to celebrate her golfing good fortune. brakingnews |

SUPERMODEL Jodie Kidd married internet whizkid Aidan Butler yesterday at a picturesque parish chapel - with hardly a celebrity in sight. About 60 family and friends attended the service in the village of Twineham, West Sussex. Polo-loving Jodie, 26, held a sheet over her face when she arrived while security men held up a tarpaulin. She and the 28-year-old groom are believed to have sold the rights to a magazine. The marriage took place of entrepreneur Mr Aidan Butler, and celebrated polo player and model Miss Jodie Kidd, at 16th Century St Peter's Church, Twineham, West Sussex. The bride wore an ivory-coloured, beaded 1930s-style dress and veil. After the ceremony a reception was held at the All England Jumping Course, Hickstead.
