James Hewitt has won a breathing space in his attempt to avoid being made bankrupt over a £2.7 million tax bill.
A High Court official adjourned the petition for his bankruptcy until Jan 13 next year to allow him time to remortgage a property and offer a settlement.

The property involved was not mentioned but the former cavalry officer, whose income was mainly derived from exploiting his affair with Diana, Princess of Wales, is known to own a flat in Cranley Gardens, Kensington, west London, worth an estimated £500,000.

A HM Revenue and Customs official made the adjournment application at the High Court at a hearing lasting under two minutes.

The taxman is pursuing 47-year-old Mr Hewitt for unpaid tax going back to 1999.

He is said to owe around £2.2 million plus interest of about £500,000.

The hearing was scheduled in October when Mr Hewitt's solicitors asked for a six week adjournment to allow him to review his tax affairs.
