EXCLUSIVE: HOMELESS DARREN DAY KIPS IN CAR
EXCLUSIVE Downfall of West End legend who loved cocaine Ex-millionaire star hits rockbottom
FALLEN star Darren Day has slept in a grubby old car after being dumped by TV chiefs, the People can reveal.
The entertainer who once earned over £1 million a year kipped for several hours in a 12-year-old Mazda borrowed from a pal.
The star of the most successful West End musicals in the last 10 years hit rock-bottom after Channel 4 bosses booted him off reality show The Games for failing to turn up.
Darren, 37, was spotted dozing in the reclined front seat of the dirty blue L-reg banger on a freezing night in Belsize Park, north-west London. The car was littered with plastic coffee cups, newspapers and rubbish.
Darren, who once owned a £315,000 flat in the same area, had been staying in hotels paid for by C4 producers before a training camp for the show.
But after being dumped he ended up in the dented banger.
When that became too painful, the former star of Summer Holiday, Carousel and Joseph begged old chums to let him crash out for a few nights. Darren's former public relations girl Alex Silver allowed him to sleep in a nursery room usually occupied by her baby daughter.
She said: "I have got a baby. It's a nightmare and my husband is away. I don't need it.
"My husband is a doctor, we have the neighbours wanting to know what's going on - it's embarrassing."
Alex said the star had left her flat and was going to Barnsley, South Yorks, where his latest girlfriend, pretty blonde actress Stephanie Dooley, lives. Alex, who is a platonic pal, has taken pity on Darren before. The last time was when he split a year ago with former Hear'Say singer Suzanne Shaw, mother of his baby son Corey.
The five-times-engaged womaniser, who earned £1 million in 2004, admitted in the same year he had blown £750,000 on cocaine.
He has since claimed he has beaten his addiction. But being kicked off The Games is a blow.
A pal said: "All his friends and family are very worried. He is a troubled man. They are all helping him as best they can. Everyone was delighted when he got on The Games but he has messed that up. He is hanging around North London and that is where he got himself in a lot of trouble before.
"He could have been a big TV star but now he has been reduced to sleeping in this car and hanging round with some dodgy characters. It is sad."
When The People approached Darren outside Alex's home he pulled his leather jacket over his head and muttered: "I don't want to talk to anyone."
When asked if he had been sleeping in a car he said: "I don't want to comment."
