22.01.07 Channel Four was engulfed in a new racism row today after a contestant on reality show Shipwrecked praised slavery. The controversy came as the broadcaster's board met to discuss the Celebrity Big Brother disaster and will increase the pressure on directors to sack chief executive Andy Duncan. Regulator Ofcom said it had received scores of complaints about the Shipwrecked outburst, which occurred on a prerecorded episode broadcast to 1.2 million viewers last night. The show pits two groups of young people against each other on desert islands in the South Pacific. One contestant, 18 year old public schoolgirl Lucy Buchanan, said she was "for slavery" and said black peoplewere "really bad." Ms Buchanan, who is from York, also made offensive comments about gay and fat people. Evening Standard |

Petition C4 over racist Shipwrecked contestant 22/1/2007 SIGN A PETITION against Lucy Buchanan, the upper-class racist contestant in Channel 4's reality show Shipwrecked. Or log on to: BLINK PLEASE FORWARD THIS PETITION TO YOUR CONTACTS LISTS PETITION TEXT To: Ofcom Riverside House, 2a Southwark Bridge Road, London, SE1 9HA. Cc: Andy Duncan Chief Executive: Channel 4, 124 Horseferry Road, London, SW1P 2TX I object to Shipwrecked contestant Lucy Buchanan's racially prejudiced comments made on the Channel 4 show on Sunday 22nd January. She admitted she does not have any Black friends but those she has met were "like, really baaad." She also commented that the British Empire should be brought back, and Black people "reinslaved." Such remarks put Celebrity Big Brother evictee Jade Goody in the shade. The fact that Lucy comes from a privileged background means that social status is no excuse for such racist attitudes. Following Celebrity Big Brother, the station is showing itself to be a repeat offender. I call upon the PCC to investigate these remarks by Lucy, and apply sanctions to Channel 4 for broadcasting such racist and highly offensive material. |

EXCLUSIVE: THE NEW JADE Channel 4's latest show is MORE racist than Big Bro CHANNEL 4 faces fresh fury after a teenager more racist than Jade Goody aired her vile views on a new reality show. Shipwrecked star Lucy Buchanan, 18, said black people were "really bad", fat people were "disgusting" and criticised gays. The public schoolgirl told fellow contestants: "I'm for the British Empire and things. I'm for slavery." Lucy's foul comments emerged as C4 bosses apologised for Jade's Celebrity Big Brother bullying and insisted: "We abhor racism." Outraged MPs could not believe C4 broadcast another bigoted tirade so soon after racist Jade's ugly behaviour. Labour MP Shahid Malik said last night: "They seem to have learned nothing. These remarks are blatantly racist and offensive." Lucy's mother Nicola said: "She's not a racist. But she does have a big mouth." Mirror |

Big Brother Is Shipwrecked “THE NEW JADE.” That Jade Goody is contrite is beyond doubt. No-one likes to be exposed as a pig-thick bully on national telly. But this new Jade is not the old Jade given a make over. This new Jade is 18-year-old Lucy Buchanan. Unlike Jade Goody, this new Jade is educated, having been tutored in public school. And, as the Mirror reports, this new Jade has thrown Channel 4 into a “NEW RACE STORM”. Lucy was elevated from reality TV also-ran to front-page horror when she opined on the broadcaster’s Shipwrecked show: “I just don’t appreciate people coming into our country and taking over our culture. We’ve got too many cultures. Britain’s not really Britain any more.” That Lucy should give full throat to her opinions while living it up for weeks on end in the Cook Islands is not without irony. The Shipwrecked show features no locals, only imported Britishers. But educated Lucy would probably point out that the Islands are named after the British navigator Captain James Cook and Queen Elizabeth II remains head of State. So far, so very UKIP. But Lucy has more to say. “I’m for the British Empire and things. I’m for slavery, but that’s never going to come back.” As Jade Goody’s agent jets out to the Cook Islands and signs Lucy to a binding deal, Channel 4 gets ready to lock Jade and Lucy into a suburban house and film the results in “No Class”. And the script for the show writes itself. Listen up as Lucy says of fat people: “They’re offensive. They can help it – eat less, exercise more, get their stomachs stitched.” You can see Jade nodding her head and holding up a DVD for Jade’s Shape Challenge. “I can’t stand fat and ugly people. They really bring you done,” says Lucy. Jade nods – once to the left, twice to the right and back again to the centre. Jade points to her new breasts. She shakes her hair-do. She squeezes a blackhead. The world watches... anorak |

Shipwrecked - Complaints Soar Waveguide - Lucy BuchananAlmost 540 people have now complained to media watchdog Ofcom about a contestant on Channel 4's Shipwrecked who backed slavery and insulted black people. Lucy Buchanan said black people were "really bad", condemned multicultural Britain and called lesbians "sinister". Her parents, David and Nicola Buchanan from Edinburgh, issued a statement to "wholeheartedly apologise" for their 18-year-old daughter's remarks. Channel 4 has said Buchanan will be seen changing her views. The Buchanans added: "As Lucy's parents, we were both distressed to see her make such loose remarks which clearly have been, quite rightly, seen as wholly inappropriate and lacking in forethought. "It is our firm belief that Lucy, as a naive teenager, made these silly and very unfortunate remarks on the back of her excitement at being on Shipwrecked." waveguide |

Channel 4 dumps Shipwrecked repeat Channel 4 has pulled tomorrow's scheduled repeat of the first episode of Shipwrecked, in which a participant praised slavery and lambasted black, gay and fat people. A Channel 4 spokesman said the decision was taken to ensure the welfare of the people taking part in the pre-recorded show, "in the context of heightened media comment". Ofcom has received nearly 500 complaints about last Sunday's first episode of Shipwrecked, after contestant Lucy Buchanan, an 18-year-old public schoolgirl from York, praised slavery and said she would get a black person to do her "slave work". The episode was due to be repeated tomorrow morning at 10.40am on Channel 4. The broadcaster has been criticised for airing Buchanan's comments, in the wake of the Celebrity Big Brother row about alleged racist bullying. "Channel 4 has taken the decision not to repeat the first episode of Shipwrecked on Channel 4, E4 or Video on Demand in order to ensure, in the context of heightened media comment, the ongoing welfare of all the contributors taking part," the Channel 4 spokesman said. The broadcaster has already defended Shipwrecked - which was filmed five months ago - saying Buchanan's views change over the course of the series. "When Lucy airs her views they are criticised and challenged by the other contestants immediately, so viewers are aware that they find them offensive and unacceptable," a spokesman said. "Viewers who continue to watch Shipwrecked will see that Lucy's views change and grow as the series goes on and she meets new people." The show, made by independent production company RDF, pits two groups of young people against each other on two desert islands in the South Pacific. It drew 1.2 million viewers when it launched on Sunday. guardian |
