Three loved-up couples put their relationship under public scrutiny in Big Brother-style box

Feb 10 2007

Wales now has its own Big Brother-style spy on the wall competition - three couples living in a Love Room. Molly Watson took a peek

THE 18ft by 15ft Love Room stands in the centre of Cardiff Bay's Red Dragon centre.

Surrounded by protective metal fencing, the room, which is not much more than a big red box, contains one double bed, one Portaloo, one window and, as of 8am yesterday, six contestants - Karen Adams Jones, 42, and her husband Marc Adams Jones, 42; a dishy looking Chris Field, 25, and his girlfriend Vickie Davies, 26, and Aimee Morgan, 19, and her boyfriend David Stanford, 20.

For the next six days - or until they're voted out - the room will be their home and the window their only contact with the outside world, apart from, that is, the Love God - the Big Brother-style voice of the Red Dragon FM operators.

Thanks to the snow, yesterday was a fairly quiet morning in the Red Dragon Centre, so my visit to the Love Room caused quite a stir.

First there was some manic waving - I imagine the novelty of doing this each time someone walks past will soon wear off - so I waved back. Then they smiled, so I smiled back. Then they stared, and I stared back. And, well, that was pretty much it.

After a while they got bored of being watched and began talking among themselves and I wandered off to read about them on the display panels on the side of the box - in case you're interested this weekend will be the first time Marc has missed a Scotland/Wales game in 34 years.

But it was a chilly morning yesterday, and like most things, I reckon the Love Room takes a little time to warm up.

It's hard to imagine you could lock one couple in a room with no shower, no mobile phone and no TV for a week and not produce fireworks, let alone three.

It seems as the centre houses not just restaurants and bars but a night club as well, and stays open until 2am, it's likely many of their visitors will be a lot more high spirited than yesterday's offering - most walked passed with just an embarrassed glance in their direction.

And Red Dragon are doing their best to make sure the competition stays interesting.

Marketing director Kate Novell says the station explicitly chose a diverse group to make it more entertaining.

And she added, "Obviously we have seen the success of Big Brother and seen the formula works, but this is a bit more intensive, with just one room."

The contestants have been allowed just a small holdall totake in, along with some luxury items including the board game Trivial Pursuit, hair straighteners and playing cards.

In addition to the stress of living in close proximity to their partner, and four strangers, they'll also be set daily tasks.

These will decide who gets to sleep in the bed - the others will have to sleep on the floor - who gets extra treats like alcoholand chocolate and who gets to sit down to a two-course dinner - the others will make do with sandwiches.

They'll also be visited by celebrities such as Dirty Sanchez' Matt Pritchard who will reportedly challenge them to an I'm A Celebrity style bug-eating contest.

Being a radio competition, the contestants also wear microphones and audio from the room will be aired on Red Dragon throughout the day. Listeners will then get the chance during the week to vote people out and the last one still in on Friday wins £5,000.

Given the competition's name, and the mini dimensions of their living space you might expect some saucy goings-on but potential voyeurs be warned, the rules restrict any lewd acts or full or partial nudity, requiring contestants to go into the Portaloo if they want to change their clothes. IcWales
