I watched when I could Christine but I have to say it was the obnoxious, rude self -interested Jonathan that I did not like and I am amazed once again as to why the voting public have rewarded him by making him this year’s winner.
I think the rest of the castaways will feel robbed if their comments last night are anything to go by.

Yes, I thought that Jonathan was rather self-obsessed and I was rather surprised that he won. In fact, when there were just him and Francie left, I kept voting for Francie, because I really did not want him to win.

I wouldn't have minded too much if he had come second though, because he did stop the programme from being boring.

. I don't think he should have been given second place Christine, imo, forth place was even too good for him.

When his type are kept in any reality tv show I believe they prevent the rest of the contestants from shining because they are so busy putting up with the crap they have to live with.

If this reward is given to someone who made the lives of his fellow castaway's so unbearable and it seems his home life is very similar - we will see it happen in other reality TV shows. I know why the more outrages characters are always kept in to amuse the viewer that needs that kind of amusement, but unfortunately we are now seeing the public appearing to Condon such behavior by making them the winner over the nicer better mannered person. That can’t be right, can it?

I reckon the reason that he won, was because at the end, he seemed to have changed from the earlier days. He seemed more caring and was a different person when he went on his date with Cathy. Also, at the end, he genuinely seemed upset that he had lost Alistair's friendship and seemed at a loss to know what to do to put things right between them.

He was still all self though I think and it wouldn't surprise me if it was all part of a game plan.

I would love to know who he will take on holiday as his guest to New Zealand as his prize.

I watched as much of castaway as I could in fact I only missed about 3 episodes (sad yes!) I loved it and thought Jonathan a worthy winner! SORRY I DID!

The whole point was "who has made the most of the experience" and lets face it like him or loathe him he was really the only one who did that! Francie was nice ... a bit too sickly sweet for my liking. Little Al was just a niave kid who came out with a few more life skills but little else and Cathy was in the final 4 by default IMO!

Very few of the others actually treated it as it was supposed to be and I got the feeling the likes of Gemma Hassan and Erica treated it as a stepping stone to a career in showbiz ala bb contestants!

You are right when you say he made the most of the experience obo because he just carried on the life style he left in Scotland. If anything all of the others were out off their comfort zones and to the best of their abilities they made the most of the experience by taking on all that was thrown at them and got on with it. Whereas the hardship of the Island was nothing new to Jonathan because that is the way he lives his life at home.

He told Danny the experience only went to reinforce his intent to continue his way of life at home.
To me all he got out of the show was a free holiday with another one thrown in after he won.

You may be right Maddy but he was still the main one who lived everyday as a real castaway. The younger members seemed happy to let the elders do all the work and perhaps thats how it would be if that lot had been shipwrecked there.

Some used it to escape from their normal life and others are obviously hoping for some kind of career boost from it, I enjoyed watching it as the social experiment is was meant to be not entertainment in the same sense as BB.

I thoroughly enjoyed it all though! I dont watch much tv these days and what I do watch Im not bothered whether I miss or watch but I liked Castaway a hell of a lot!

I enjoyed the show as well, obo but I was annoyed there was no live streaming because I believe you can only get a true sense of what is going on if you can see your own version of events.

Casting his net

REMEMBER that grumpy Scottish bloke who won the BBC's Castaway (his name was Jonathan Shearer)?

Well, he's still on the warpath because no one cared about the show and, six months on, no one gives two hoots about him.

He placed an ad in a mag with a link to his MySpace site, where he begs for something to do.

He whines: "I am bored. I am on the dole. I see nothing on my horizon. Someone, somewhere has something interesting for me to do.

"I have created these pages to try to find myself a 'job', or a 'wife' or a 'project' or anything to get me excited about life again."

He fancies being a field ecologist, pub landlord, writer, teacher, vet or psychiatrist.

Then he talks about the many jobs he's been fired from and also that he was once a shoplifter.

Potential employers don't all rush at once...
