ANNIKA'S BIG CHALLENGE: TO WIN TV TALENT SHOW Channel Four at 12.50pm on Sundays Imagine being on a show that combines the house politics of Big Brother with the talent nuturing of X-Factor. That is the reality for St Ann's-based singer Annika Gabbitas, 22, who is taking part in Channel Four programme Musicool. Annika has been recording at the Community Studio at the Russell Youth Club, in Lowdham Street, St Ann's, for the last year and a half. She was snapped up by the reality show within 30 minutes of her manager sending in her entry. Musicool has brought together a diverse group of unsigned and untrained acts from across the UK. Following a nationwide search, the show, hosted by Edith Bowman, selected a group of singers and musicians with roots in a wide range of musical genres - from death metal to hip hop. The ten contestants now face intensive training in dance, acting and singing. They will stage a new, contemporary musical in London in front of a live audience on Sunday, May 6. The programme is broadcast on Channel Four at 12.50pm on Sundays. Nottingham-born Annika, whose family still live here, used to be in a girl band before deciding to go solo. The singer, who describes herself as the "r'n'b Arctic Monkeys" and hates it "when UK singers sing in an American accent", says she is enjoying herself on the show. "I'm having a lot of fun, it's a fantastic experience," she said. "So far every day has been different and it is just so challenging and surprising. "I was really excited and I've been working towards this for many years and it is going to give me a chance to show everyone what I am about. "I hope it will open a few doors. I just feel so blessed to have got on the show after the way I auditioned. "I can't say any more because the rest of the show is being kept under wraps." Annika has been given positive feedback from mentors in the house, who include Fiona Laird, director at the National Theatre, Mike Dixon, a director and composer on West End shows and Sean Cheeseman, choreographer for Michael and Janet Jackson, Prince, Whitney Houston and Britney Spears. Jermaine Jackson is also helping the housemates. Annika's manager and producer at the St Ann's Community Studios, Trevor Rose, has supported and developed local talent for many years. He said: "We got the e-mail on the last day of entry and I mentioned it to Annika. She thought it was a good idea but was in a bit of doubt about whether she would make it." Trevor sent in her myspace page - a website profile of Annika and her music - to Channel Four. "Within half an hour they were on the phone, they said she was perfect for the show and they loved her concept," he said. Neil McCallum, commissioning editor of T4, Music and Youth, said: "The artists that have been selected to work on Musicool are of a exceptional standard are a great representation of the diverse music scene across the UK today." thisisnottingham |
