Dancing On Ice celebrities to go solo in Sunday's semi-final

The Dancing On Ice stars will have to cope without their professional partners in Sunday's semi-final as they go it alone.

They will have to perform a 20-second routine on their own in this week's Solo Spot. Bookies' fave Chris Fountain said: "It's very close. The first person to fall could be the one to go. The solo spot could make all the difference."

He is up against Gareth Gates, Zaraah Abrahams and Suzanne Shaw.

Dancing On Ice star Matt Evers: Suzanne and I will survive
BEST FOR WEEKEND TV

Crash Test Dummies is what Suzanne's partner Matt Evers has nicknamed the accident-prone pair. But he insists they will get to next weekend's final!

"It's been unbelievable the injuries we've had," says Matt, 31, from Minnesota. "But Suzanne is a survivor - to go on last week with a fractured ankle says a lot about her. I think her inspiration is her son, Corey."

Matt reckons this is going to be the best semi-final ever because the contestants are fairly evenly matched. "Chris has an unfair advantage because he comes from ice-hockey but he's not a live performer."

And as only the final two couples get to do the Torvill and Dean Bolero routine - and Matt lost out with Bonnie Langford in the 2006 final - he's planning on being one of them.

JUDGE JASON'S VERDICT ON SEMI-FINALISTS

Chris Fountain

He's a real character who's at home on the ice. But he's losing the connection with Frankie. It's more about his solo tricks and less about the partnership.

Suzanne Shaw

She sat on Matt's shoulders and twirled an umbrella - safe and uninspiring. Stop playing on the sympathy vote, I don't care about her injuries.

Zaraah Abrahams

She didn't deserve to be in the skate-off last week. The others think they will get to the final unless they fall - Zaraah needs to give the performance of her life.

Gareth Gates

He showed great craftmanship with challenging props, the hat and cane. I love his real chemistry with Maria - but he hasn't popped his cork yet.

GARETH RANTS AT RIVALS

BACKSTAGE relations have cooled at Dancing On Ice after Gareth Gates moaned about his rivals’ unfair advantage.

In the last week the remaining hopefuls – Chris Fountain, Gareth, Suzanne Shaw and Zaraah Abrahams – have barely spoken to each other.

Last night a show source said: “Things have broken down so much it’s frosty – it’s a world away from the sweetness and light that was going on before.”

God-fearing former choirboy Gareth is at the forefront of the cold front – particularly towards Chris and Suzanne.

The heart-throb has finished behind Hollyoaks hunk Chris and ex-Hear’Say babe Suzanne week on week.

But the Pop Idol runner-up told how he was now confident of going all the way thanks to the Almighty fighting his corner.

Speaking to us before tonight’s penultimate show Gareth, 23, said: “I have a little pray each week before taking to the ice.

“I have always believed in God and just pray to him to make sure everything will be OK.

“It always makes me feel calmer and gives me the little extra confidence I need.

“I’ve only been skating for 12 weeks and Chris has been skating for 12 years but I’m catching him up. I would love to beat him.

“Out of me, Suzanne and Chris I’ve not had any dance or skating lessons so I’ve probably had to work a bit harder.

“I guess you could say they had an advantage.”

After completing the celeb skating contest Gareth is hoping to kick-start his faltering singing career.

“Music is my life,” he said, “so I will be returning to it in some shape or form.

“That and planning the wedding.”

The stuttering singer got engaged to dancer Suzanne Mole, 32, on New Year’s Eve.

He told us: “Suzanne has always wanted a big white wedding and so have I.”

Leona Lewis is appearing on tonight’s show singing new single Footsteps In The Sand and Better In Time.

Gates shown the door

Pop star Gareth Gates has been booted off Dancing on Ice.

The singer was unanimously voted off the show after a semi-final skate-off with Coronation Street's Zaraah Abrahams.

Abrahams, Suzanne Shaw and Chris Fountain will go through to next week's final.

Gareth and partner Maria Filippov's routine, performed to Living on a Prayer by Bon Jovi, failed to impress the judges and scored 24.5 points.

Judge Jason Gardiner said: "This is the semi-final and that wasn't a semi-final performance."

Gareth said: "I have fought out there and that is all I could've done.

"It's been fantastic and I love Maria to bits. Thank you to everyone."

I like Gareth but it would have a crying shame if he had stayed over the better skater Zaraah. :D
