BBC1 - 1/12 Wednesday 02 July 8:00pm - 9:00pmJohn Torode and Gregg Wallace put their usual shouty style and scathing comments on the back burner for this series, presumably because the contestants are celebrities who might just shout back (and what would be the point of yelling at them that winning this "COULD CHANGE THEIR LIVES" when it so obviously won't?). In fact, the judges are as nice as pie to contestants in these first heats, including Andi Peters, Ninia Benjamin and Joe McGann - showering them with culinary compliments such as "That's gorgeous" and "Where shall we send your MasterChef trophy?" after the first mouthful of their food. The competition follows a very familiar menu of tasks that includes working in a professional kitchen and rustling up a dish from a mystery box of ingredients, but what makes this so watchable is the relationship between the acerbic Torode and salt-of-the-earth geezer Wallace, an on-screen partnership that works as beautifully as putting fish with chips or strawberries with cream.
