Television chef Gordon Ramsay has issued a statement after reports that he was untruthful about his claims to have played for Rangers. He said any inaccuracies in accounts of his football career are due to the passing of time. The chef spoke out following reports he lied about his time with Rangers. A statement from Gordon Ramsay Holdings said: "Any inaccuracies regarding the details of this period can be explained by the fact that all this occurred nearly 25 years ago." Ramsay boasted on Desert Island Discs, in his autobiography and in a series of interviews that he played three first team games for the Glasgow giants as a youngster. In truth, the chef trialled briefly with the club, playing one testimonial game but never securing a contract. In his 2006 autobiography, Humble Pie, Ramsay went into great detail about what it was like playing for the top side. "Outside the stadium, you'd be signing things like pillow cases and the side of prams, and families would turn up with their kids to have their trainers signed," he wrote. However Rangers historian Robert McElroy was keen to put the record straight and said: "He was never a signed player for us and certainly didn't play any first team games and wasn't offered any sort of contract - it's all complete and utter nonsense." waveguide.co.uk |
