A nation of Susan Boyles

The most extraordinary thing about the whole Susan Boyle story is surely the fact that it's so ordinary.

From the woman in the church choir with the fabulous voice to the shy boy who's the leading light in the local am dram society, we are surely a country of Susan Boyles.

A report from the Scottish Arts Council a few years back confirmed what I'd always known, that three out of five of us are budding performers (try it on your social circle next time you're out, it's surprisingly accurate.) We just don't often make a song and dance out of it.

The only difference with Susan - and I wish her the very best in Britain has Talent, especially if it means I can continue to watch her progress without enduring the rest of the show - is that by stepping onto national television, she's unwittingly stepped onto the international stage.

Everyone from Demi Moore to Oprah Winfrey has been weeping into their cornflakes, Susan can't even go to the shops now without reporters asking her how she's coping.

And the council has apparently had to come and reinforce her garden fence, thanks to the truckloads of American TV crews who've been tramping across her lawn.

How talented Susan Boyle exposes our shallow side

The reaction to ‘nearly 47-year-old’ Susan Boyle's appearance on Britain's Got Talent has become a global phenomenon.

And now Boyle-mania is spreading across the world with the single, unemployed Scot wowing Demi Moore, appearing on the Larry King Show and being impersonated by Jay Leno.

The question is, of course, why? Why do we find the idea of a ‘frumpy' middle-aged woman singing (beautifully, I'll admit) a not very popular song (Go on, admit it, you couldn't whistle a bar from I Dreamed a Dream if your life depended on it) from the so-so musical Les Mis?

There are, of course, very base reasons. The sentimental ‘never been kissed' angle, her cat Pebbles, the viewing drama of seeing the sneery smiles of Cowell, Morgan and Holden changing to disbelief, shock and, in the end, admiration, all make for compulsive viewing.

Boyle: 'I need a makeover'

Susan Boyle has admitted she needs a new look after seeing herself on Britain's Got Talent.

The Scot became an overnight sensation after footage of her singing on the ITV1 talent show attracted more than 100 million hits.

But her unglamorous wardrobe and unkempt locks - which have earned her the nickname "the hairy angel" - may soon be a thing of the past.

Boyle said: "I will need to sort out my dress sense and my weight. It wasn't until I saw myself on TV that I realised how frumpy I was."

The unlikely star has vowed to throw herself into an exercise regime to slim down for the stage.

And there were early signs of a wardrobe overhaul when she was snapped wearing a colourful new dress from Wallis and a leather jacket from Primark.
