The idea is that the celebs will mentor the raw recruits who, if they work hard, rise to the challenges and still manage to smile at guests, may get real employment at the end. As job interviews go, it’s a toughie. As TV series go, it could be brilliant.
But crikey, imagine Kim Woodburn inspecting your hospital corners or Hilary Devey peering at the way you’ve wrapped an item in the gift shop. And who would dare disappoint team captains Gordon Ramsay and Mary Portas? This isn’t a set-up, though — the guests are real, the hotel’s takings go to unemployment charities and there are real jobs at stake.

Channel 4 opens its own hotel for a week, staffed with some of its most popular stars, and co-managed by Gordon Ramsay, heading up the kitchen and restaurant, and Mary Portas, in charge of the rooms. In turn they are training a staff of unemployed people desperate for a change of luck. Many other C4 celebrities will be popping up too - Gok Wan, Christian Jessen, Katie Piper, Phil Spencer, Kirstie Allsopp and Kim Woodburn all have their own areas of responsibility, and will be dealing with members of the public at all hours of the day, managing complaints and catering to their needs in the establishment's many facilities - including a gym and a spa - while competing to see who can raise the most money for a range of employment charities.
