Post subject:  Fame Academy or Pop Idol ?

Just found this article on the BBC News Entertainment site. Thought it might be of some interest as it compares and contrasts Fame Academy and Pop Idol discussing which has been the most successful etc. What do you think?

''Why are the shows similar?
Both shows strive to find the next big music star and rely on viewers to vote for their favourites. The number of contestants is whittled down each week until the finalists go up against each other to win record deals. They are both flagship mass youth market shows for their respective channels.

Who produces them?
Endemol, the company behind Big Brother, produces Fame Academy for the BBC. Thames Television makes Pop Idol for ITV.

Which programme has spawned the most stars?
Although Pop Idol was won by Will Young, runners-up Gareth Gates and Darius Danesh have also achieved success, while finalists Rosie Ribbons, Jessica Garlick, Hayley Evetts and Zoe Birkett have tasted brief chart fame.

Fame Academy alumni include winner David Sneddon and finalists Sinead Quinn, while Ainsley Henderson, Lemar Obika and Malachi Cush also secured record deals.

Pop Idol judge Simon Cowell has eclipsed them all by becoming a love-him-or-hate-him star in the UK and US......''

I love Pop Idol.....mostly the first couple of episodes cos you see all those mad people. I was laughing soooo much at that woman with her cassette recorder who then went on to sing somewhere over the rainbow, then when she got told to go home she threw a right big strop ::lol:: ::lol:: ::lol::
And there was the other girl who got told to come back on Friday, then they called her back to say she was definitely in. I'm sure she was drunk. ::lol::

I thought that too Heidi ::lol:: I didn't actually think she was that good... at least not good enough to get through. That blonde (hunk!) from Scotland was excellent and I agree he will probably be in the final 10.

Yeah I think so too about the blonde guy.

But I forgot to mention the girl with the overflowing boobs who sang Beverly Craven's Promise Me ::lol:: ::lol:: ::lol::
What was she thinking? White badly fitting top with BLACK fishnets and GLASS shoes. Then to top all that she sang very badly. ::lol::

You have to feel a bit sorry for them. I was thinking as I was watching it, that after it being on so many times, that they should know the standard they need to escape total embarrassment and ridicule. I bet that most of them have mums or family members telling them 'you'd blow them away if you applied'. Poor sods. I remember my mum telling me when I was about 6 that I could be a singer after singing Wuthering Heights at school. She also told me I was such a pretty girl! Mums eh?

......in the 18th century, the mad and deluded, were ridiculed,
for our amusement, by being put in the stocks, in the town square, so the public could insult and throw rotten fruit, at them.
......now they're ridiculed, on prime-time Saturday t.v :-?
.......how times change.

good point aadrian whats changes nothing really. personally i love pop idol because for once we found a singer that could sing anything and in pete watermans own words you have the most unique voice ive heard in twenty years how true pete. and for the first time in 30 yrs i have started to buy records/cds ect . i cant think of anything will young cant sing, to me hes the new sinatra and could stay as long as he wanted to in the media limelight but im not to sure he wants to or take himself seriously enough. but if these programmes bring forth talent like will, gareth, darius then they are doing a good job. as will said in an interview, what record company would have looked twice and a 17yrs old with a stutter, and a middle class gay boy, not one so well done pop idol for doing a good job ;)

Will, is certainly a talented singer, and rightfully won the competition.
(Much to the annoyance of Simon Cowell.)
....not really sure, where his career ,is going though.
He's released a couple of mundane cover versions ,and since then....
not alot. I hope he achieves what he wants, he's talented and seems a good bloke.
As for Mr Gates.........pre-pubescent, chart fodder.(Who's career, has waned so much, he's resorting to blabbling to the tabloids, about his
liasons, with the "lovely" Jordan. ho-hum. :-?
