Pakistan's most famous couple, cricket legend Imran Khan and his British socialite wife Jemima, have divorced.
"I sadly announce that Jemima and I are divorced," Khan, a current parliamentarian, said in a statement released by his political party, Tehreek-e-Insaf.
"Whilst Jemima tried her best to settle here, my political life made it difficult for her to adapt to life in Pakistan."
Akbar S. Babar, an official in Khan's party, said that the divorce took place a few days ago in England. He said it took place amicably and the two had resolved all issues between them.
Khan has become an extremely strong voice in opposition to President Gen. Pervez Musharraf's government as a member of parliament. His name is often brought up on a short list of up and coming future Pakistani leaders.
In recent months, Jemima Khan spent more and more of her time in England, sparking rumours that the couple's relationship was on the rocks.
Jemima Khan is the daughter of the late billionaire Sir James Goldsmith, who was among Britain's wealthiest people. She was a prominent socialite in London, mixing with the likes of the late Princess Diana and other international figures.
The marriage between Jemima and Imran Khan in 1995 caused a stir in both Britain and Pakistan. Jemima converted from Judaism to Islam in order to marry Khan and changed her name to Haiqa. The couple have two sons.
