It does appear that this was a massive **** up by the umpire. He looked at the ball and felt that it was in an unfit state. But he hasn't seen anything at all to suggest that the ball had been put into that state artificially. The 5 run penalty was meaningless in the grand state of things, but the accusation of cheating was without any real substance to back it up. I don't blame Pakistan at all for their reaction, and its been backed by many leading lights in the game such as Nasser Hussein, Ian Botham and Dickie Bird.
Afridi is still a cheat however for his twisting action on the wicket last year, and will carry that tag around with him until retirement.
