Match of the Day Live: Euro 2012: MOTD: First Quarter-Final7:30pm - 10pm BBC1, BBC Sport Interactive: (Freeview), BBC Sport Interactive BBC 1 Review by: Daniel Bettridge
RadiotimesThere are no second chances from now on as Euro 2012 reaches the knockout stages. Tonight’s match will see the winners from Group A (home side Poland, Greece, Russia or the Czech Republic) take on the runners-up of Group B (Denmark, Netherlands, Germany or Portugal) at the 50,000-capacity National Stadium in Warsaw.
This stunning arena will play host to indie rockers Coldplay later this summer, and today’s teams will hope that none of their players suffers A Rush of Blood to the Head, lest their tournament hopes go Up in Flames.
About this programme
Czech Republic v Portugal (Kick-off 7.45pm). Coverage of the opening quarter-final between the winners of Group A and the runners-up in Group B, held at the National Stadium in Warsaw. The knockout phase of the tournament begins in earnest, as the eight teams to finish in the top two positions of their respective groups compete for places in the last four. The Czechs' tournament got off to a terrible start when they were thrashed 4-1 by Russia, but they recovered from that setback admirably, and victories over Greece and Poland in their next two encounters were enough to see them top Group A. They face a tough task tonight against a Portugal side that qualified from a formidable group also containing table-toppers Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands. Progression to this stage looked unlikely following a 1-0 loss in their opening match against the Germans, especially as Denmark surprisingly won 1-0 against the Netherlands, who were considered to be contenders to win the tournament. However, a 3-2 win against the Danes preceded a 2-1 victory over the Dutch, ensuring they finished as runners-up.
