I guess popularity waned after Kelly retired, Paul Kimmage was a hopeful for Ireland soon after but never really made it to the top.

Armstrong has it wrapped up now after today, there's no way he'll lose 2 minutes plus in the time trial next Saturday, was a good stage today tho.

and Martin Earley - so pleased for him when he won the stage into Pau one year. Paul Kimmage became unpopular amongst those involved in pro cycling after he published his book, a Rough Ride, exposing the extent of drug abuse in the sport.

Armstrong has it wrapped up - but not if I bet on him and put my betting curse on!

Lance Armstrong retired from cycling on Sunday after winning a seventh Tour de France title and still at the height of his powers.

The Texan, who turns 34 in September, made a last grand entrance to Paris after three weeks in which he has been as dominant as at any time since he won his first tour six years ago.

He finished four minutes, 40 seconds ahead of the Italian Ivan Basso while Jan Ullrich was third, six minutes 21 seconds away from first place.

Armstrong described it as a "dream podium", paying tribute to both men - Ullrich, who has finished second to him on three occasions, and Basso, who is widely tipped as the man most likely to next year.

"This is the guy (Ullrich) that has challenged me and our team," said Armstrong.

"He's a special rival and a special person.

"Ivan, he's too good a friend to race against and he's perhaps the future of the Tour de France."

Because of cycling's continuing battle against doping, any winner of any race faces allegations and rumours.

And, as the most successful cyclist of the last 30 years, Armstrong has faced more than most.

However, he made a passionate defence of his spot today, telling the huge crowd on the Champs Elysees: "To the cynics and the sceptics, I'm sorry you cannot dream big, I'm sorry you cannot believe in miracles.

"You should believe in these athletes. This is a hard sporting event and only hard work wins it. Vive le Tour forever."

Armstrong has certainly worked hard over the last three weeks but over the 20th stage, the only dangers that remained to Armstrong were the French roads, made greasy by the damp conditions.

There was a warning on the approach to Paris when a crash just in front of him threatened to bring him down.

But he navigated clear of danger and the final 144.5km of an extraordinary career passed safely with Armstrong well protected by his Discovery team-mates.

The honour of winning the final stage of the 2005 Tour went to the T-Mobile rider Alexander Vinokourov, the champion of Kazakhstan and a rider known for his quixotic approach.

On this occasion his daring paid off as he surged clear of the peloton in pursuit of Brad McGee before powering past the Australian on the final circuit.

But all of the attention was on Armstrong.

He is reported to be in better condition now than he was when he completed his inspiring comeback from testicular cancer by winning the 1999 Tour.

So it is regrettable he is retiring now when an eighth Tour and some of cycling's other great honours would seem to be within his reach.

However, he has plenty to keep him busy with three children, the Lance Armstrong Foundation and his continued involvement in the Discovery team he co-owns.

While the Texan's future is mapped out for him, what happens to cycling now remains unclear.

Armstrong stimulated unprecedented interest in the sport across the world, particularly in the United States where he enjoys a profile higher than the biggest stars of basketball or baseball.

Whether cycling can keep the attention of the world's biggest market place in his absence is unknown.

For his rivals, however, his exit is a chance to take some of the limelight - an attitude summed up by McGee.

"I'm proud to say I rode in the Armstrong era," he said.

"But I'm not saying I'm disappointed he's leaving because it opens up doors."

Those doors could open to a team-mate of Armstrong's, the Ukrainian Yaroslav Popovych who won the white jersey for the best young rider.

a wonderful, achievement by Armstrong. ()^

It would be lovely to think, that he was clean. :D

But there's always that doubt, in the back of my mind. :-?

The world of cycling, has been dogged with drug scandals, for years and years.

....you can never be sure, unfortunately- and that taints it ,somewhat, in my eyes.

What doubt would that be then?

For a start, Armstrong is the most tested cyclist in the world in what is one of the most tested sports in the world. If he's taking drugs, but always returning with a negative result, then what are the chances of other athletes doing the same thing? So you could come to your conclusion about any sportsperson.

His achievements could also be attributed to there not being many great cyclists around to be of any competition and the fact that he revolves his entire training and racing schedule around one race: the Tour de France. given the facts this is probably a more plausible reason for his incredible Tour achievements than any assumption that he's on drugs. Armstrong may have won a record 7 Tours, but he's not the greatest cyclist ever.

Never mind all that, the fact that he's come back from testicular cancer and continued as a professional sportsperson is a remarkable achievement in itself.

No positive tests on Tour - UCI

Quote:
There were no positive dope tests from the urine and blood samples taken during the 2005 Tour de France, says the International Cycling Union (UCI).

However, the UCI admitted that one sample did contain the stimulants pseudoephedrine and norpseudoephedrine.

The UCI said it decided to take no further action after experts advised that the positive test could arise from the taking of an authorised product.

A total of 164 urine and blood samples were taken during July's Tour.

Sadly there's all kinds of new performance enhancing drugs we don't have tests for....I'm always surprised when someone's caught using a relatively well known drug, either it means there's no new drugs out there or they're on a poor(not rich) team...

It's extremely difficult to ascertain whether high levels of EPO in the bloodstream are drug induced or produced by training at altitude which will also raise EPO and hence red cell counts. There are also medical conditions(such as primary polycythaemia) where an individual naturally has a higher than normal red cell volume without any enhancement. So though we've been able to take accurates EPO levels for some time now in labs, proving cheating still proves troublesome

I say level the playing field and let everyone take what they want instead of all the artificial meddling - what is a drug and what isn't? should we ban water, sugar, chickens, because some drugs are naturally occurring but are still on the banned list.

if you took a sample of the general population and tested them I bet a significant number would not pass a sports drug test, yet the hoo-ha surrounding drugs and popular opinion is such that it is hypocritical imho

more drugs than the Hacienda

Tour de France winner Floyd Landis has given a positive drugs test, according to his Phonak team.
The 30-year-old American, who claimed victory in the Tour de France on Sunday, has tested positive for the male sex hormone testosterone.

The positive test came after stage 17 of the Tour, which saw Landis record an epic victory after struggling on the final climb the day before.

Landis has been suspended pending results of his B sample analysis.

The International Cycling Union (UCI) announced on Wednesday that a rider had failed a doping test but would not reveal his name.

The rider will not race anymore until this problem is totally clear

Phonak statement

"The Phonak Cycling Team was notified on Wednesday by the UCI of an unusual level of testosterone/epitestosterone ratio in the test made on Floyd Landis after stage 17 of the Tour de France," said a team statement.

"The team management and the rider were both totally surprised of this physiological result.

"The rider will ask in the upcoming days for the counter analysis (B sample) to prove either that this result has come from a natural process or that this is the result of a mistake."

Phonak have also said that if the second sample confirms the positive test, Landis will be sacked.

"In application of the Pro Tour Ethical Code, the rider will not race anymore until this problem is totally clear," the statement added.

"If the result of the B sample analysis confirms the result of the A sample, the rider will be dismissed and will then pass the corresponding endocrinological examinations."

Landis had already withdrawn from two races in Europe this week, Wednesday's Acht van Chaam street race in the Netherlands and Thursday's Jyske Bank Grand Prix in Denmark.

"Today, Phonak confirmed the cancellation. They could not say anything about why Landis has disappeared," said Jyske Bank Grand Prix spokesman Nils Finderup.

"We have tried to call him, to call his agent, and to call the head of the Phonak team, but no one has answered."

Organisers of the Acht van Chaam event were also angry at Landis' no-show.

"We have tried to contact Floyd and his manager but we have not been able to," said race agent John van den Akker.

"We are very annoyed. We have invested a lot of money to ensure his appearance and we would have expected some kind of explanation."

Landis finished 57 seconds ahead of Spain's Oscar Pereiro in the general classification to claim his first Tour de France title last weekend.
