Post subject:  Unofficial BBFans Gloucester City FC thread
Well, most people here seem to follow Premiership/League sides but wonder if BBFans can adopt a team of its own? My own suggestion would be to follow the fortunes of Gloucester City FC, the football team I love and support.

The reason for this is that the team is based on the traditional and historic values, mainly because the team is so poor it can't afford the best players. The annual wage bill for the WHOLE squad is about £60k a year, less than what some Premiership players earn in a week. The players are mainly young (early 20s) but also contains a few ageing stalwarts up front. Nearly all the players were brought up in and around the city of Gloucester, not some far-flung corner of the globe.

Despite all this, the team achieved an incredible run of games last season going from 18th to 2nd and gaining promotion the Southern League (Doc Martens) Premier division. On Saturday they drew 0-0 away at Bedford Town, a team favoured to achieve promotion at the end of the season and has one of the highest attendances in the League (500-700 a game).

The player-manager is Chris Burns, ex-Pompey 'star', who played in the famous 1-1 FA Cup Semi-Final against Liverpool. He also hails from the city.

If there's any team I think we could all follow the fortunes of a-la-Sky-documentary/ Fash FC-style it should be this one (although technically I am a bit biased!). It's a fairly neutral team to follow as I don't know of many forum members supporting rival teams.

In the meantime, I'll still put up news and stuff on here, and maybe even get a few of you to come to matches, stand on the terraces, chanting and hurling abuse, and enjoying a burger and cup-a-soup on freezing cold Tuesday night under the floodlights!

Inverness Caley are responsible for the best ever football headline written:
"Super Caley Are Fantastic Celtic Are Atrocious" when they beat them in some cup comp a few seasons ago.

Team Bath at home tonight, kick off 7.45, Meadow Park (unfortunately I won't be there as i'm on a bleedin course!). C'mon yellows!

Honestly can't see how fans can support Premiership clubs - don't you feel alienated? :-?

Rochdale had a friendly with Gloucester City a couple of weeks ago and battered you 4-1 but the place was quite welcoming though it was an absolute ******* to find coming from Rochdale!

Not a bad result in the Rochdale friendly, only 4 goals conceded! We attract all the glamour clubs, eh? ;)

Well, so far so good, our first home game and our first 3 points of the season, taken from Team Bath, the state-sponsored footie team. For info, the players of Team Bath are on the pretence of being students. The truth is that they are all young ex-pros released by their Premiership/Championship clubs and now enrolled on 'full-time' 'courses' at the Uni and enjoying the multi-million pound facilities at the centre of excellence. So for clubs struggling to attract finances it's always a pleasure to beat them.

Currently lying 7th in the league with 4 points.

Yeay! Another game and another 3 points this time beating Dunstable Town at home 3-1. Not a great performance against a team that caused us probs from crosses and corners, and who are currently propping up the table. Great goal from Tom Webb, a 19-year old local and another local youngster, Jimmy Cox, came on as a sub and caused mayhem in their 18-yard box.

Results went well for us elsewhere so we're now 4th in the League, level on points with the three teams above us, Chippenham Tn, Chesham United, and Cirencester Town, with King's Lynn losing at home to Hitchin, and Halesowen losing away at Histon, who we play nxt saturday at home.

Will post a list of players and positions soon. So, 7 points from 9, not bad, but the performances still need to improve (especially the Team Bath game where we were soo lucky after playing like a crock of something not very nice).

Well, it was going to happen sooner or later, our first defeat. The worst thing about this game was that we threw it away, albeit with the ref's help. From being 2-nill up, City gave all 3 points to United via two penalties, the last of which came in the 89th minute. Gutting. To be fair, this makes up for our poor performance/great result against Team Bath, so overall, can't complain too much. Another wonder goal by our pacy centre-forward Coxy again.

We're now 7th in the League, on 7 points.

Chippenham lead (pld 4/10pts), then it's Chesham (4/10), Halesowen, Bath and Aylesbury (all 4/9), Ciren (4/8). A long, long way to go...
