Berti Vogts has resigned as Scotland manager after a string of poor results. But in a statement the German said had quit mainly because of the "disgraceful" abuse he has suffered from fans. "From my point of view, the decision has been made with a heavy heart," he said in a statement. "I must say that the major factor in this decision has been the disgraceful abuse that I have suffered, especially of late. "It has degenerated into a physical nature, especially on recent occasions where I have been spat upon. "This is not acceptable behaviour in a civilised society and I know that the vast majority of Scots will join me in my disgust." He went on: "The abuse is something that people in public life must get used to, but now it is having a serious effect upon my home life." Vogts, 57, was officially appointed as Scotland boss in March 2002. Defeats by France, Nigeria, South Korea and South Africa in his opening games did not bode well. A 4-0 drubbing by Wales in Cardiff was followed by the heaviest home defeat since February 1973 when Hungary won 3-0 at Hampden in August. Just two points from the three opening World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia, Norway and Moldova sealed Vogts' fate. Former Rangers manager Walter Smith is among those tipped to succeed him.
