10 MARCH 2005
Olympic hero Kelly Holmes has added another medal to her collection, after she was made a Dame at Buckingham Palace. The 34-year-old, who took gold in both the 800 and 1500 metre events last year, could barely contain the emotion when she received the title on Wednesday.
"The Queen said she was delighted to give me the honour and said the gold medals were a great achievement," revealed the athlete afterwards. "When I heard the national anthem at the start of the investiture it brought tears to my eyes because it brought back memories of standing on the rostrum in Athens. I have won 14 major medals and to top it off with this is fantastic."
Her proud mum Pam Thomson and grandfather Geoff Norris both came along to share the moment with her. And Kelly also proved her mettle in the style stakes, thanks to a little help from top designer Jasper Conran.
The diminutive celeb showed off her winning form in a bone-coloured silk crepe jacket and skirt with customised Jimmy Choo shoes, while Boodles jewellers provided her with £15,000 worth of diamonds to add a little sparkle her big day.
