Jan 23 2005 Exclusive By David Brown SHAMED soccer star Lee Hughes has lost his right to appeal against a six-year jail sentence, it was revealed yesterday. He was caged in August for causing the death of Douglas Graham in a road smash. The 28-year-old former West Brom striker hoped to be freed early to rebuild his career. But a judge has ruled that there are insufficient grounds for an appeal. Mr Graham, 56, was a rear-seat passenger in a car hit by Hughes's high-powered £100,000 Mercedes in Coventry. The £15,000-a-week star, from Smethwick, West Midlands, avoided a breath test by fleeing the crash scene. Mr Graham's wife, who survived the accident, died in December at her Coventry home. Friends said she never got over the trauma of her husband's death. People |
