Thursday March 10, 07:17 PM PIRAEUS, Greece (AFP) - Newcastle took a major step towards the UEFA Cup quarter-finals with a 3-1 demolition of Olympiakos, who finished the match with only nine players. It was the sixth successive win for Graeme Souness's side, but left a sour taste with Olympiakos. The Greeks' first European loss at home this season came on the 80th birthday of their founding. Spanish referee Arturo Ibanez red carded two Olympiakos players in the first half and the hosts were subsequently forced to play catch-up. Newcastle took a 1-0 lead at the 12th minute when veteran striker Alan Shearer blasted a penalty kick in the upper left corner past keeper Antonis Nikopolidis. Olympiakos defender Grigoris Georgatos had brought down Kieron Dyer in the penalty box and the Greek was immediately sent off, much to the displeasure of the standing-room only crowd of 33,000 fans at Karaiskaki Stadium. Olympiakos fought back and managed to draw level only four minutes later when skipper Predrag Djordjevic smashed a penalty kick into the left top corner of the goal beyond an outstretched Shay Given. The penalty was awarded when Olympiakos' Ieroklis Stoltidis was fouled by Newcastle defender Andy O'Brien, who was cautioned for the offence. Newcastle moved 2-1 up at halftime after a free kick by Frenchman Laurent Robert from just outside the penalty box found the net in the 34th minute. Just two minutes before the interval Olympiakos defender Athanasios Kostoulas received his second yellow card from Ibanez, leaving the hosts deeper in the mire. Newcastle controlled play in the second half, and reinforced their bid for a place in the last eight, ahead of the second leg next Thursday, when Dutchman Patrick Kluivert scored from close range in the 69th minute after collecting a pass from the left by substitute James Milner. |
