Steven Gerrard is doubtful for Liverpool's Champions League quarter-final second leg against Juventus because of a groin injury.
Liverpool captain Gerrard was unable to complete a warm-down with the rest of the squad at the end of the 1-0 defeat at Manchester City.

Gerrard received treatment from Liverpool's medical staff on Sunday.

Liverpool are hopeful Gerrard will be fit, but Xabi Alonso is on stand-by for his first game since 1 January.

A Liverpool spokesman confirmed: "Steven Gerrard is suffering from a groin injury. He is a doubt for Wednesday's match but we will know more on Monday afternoon after discussions with the medical staff at Melwood."

Juventus struggled to cope with Gerrard in Liverpool's 2-1 first-leg win, eventually man-marking the England star, and his absence would be a bitter blow for Wednesday's clash.

Manager Rafael Benitez will be desperate for Gerrard to prove his fitness, with Alonso having played only 45 minutes of reserve team football since breaking his ankle against Chelsea on 1 January.

Striker Djibril Cisse is in Liverpool's squad - the first time since breaking his leg in October - for the Champions League match against Juventus.
But Steven Gerrard has been ruled out because of a groin injury.

Midfielder Xabi Alonso is expected to fill in for the Liverpool captain in his first game since 1 January.

Juventus striker David Trezeguet has failed to shake off an ankle injury and will not play but Brazilian midfielder Emerson is fit and available.

Alessio Tacchinardi is suspended and French right-back Jonathan Zebina has a thigh injury and should be replaced by Gianluca Pessotto.

Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic will take Trezeguet's place in attack alongside Alessandro del Piero.

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez will ponder two massive gambles with Cisse and Alonso.

Cisse was expected to miss the whole of the season after breaking his leg against Blackburn last year.

However, Benitez has recalled the France forward even though he has not kicked a ball for six months.

Benitez said: "Cisse will not start the match but maybe we will use him in the last 20 minutes or so if we need something different and he is quick and can score goals.

"He has been saying for a couple of weeks that he is ready but we have wanted to be careful and make sure he is okay."

Benitez must also decide whether Alonso is ready to return, despite playing only 45 minutes for the reserves since breaking his ankle against Chelsea.

A group of 50 Juventus fans clashed with police outside the Delle Alpi stadium, shortly before their Champions League game against Liverpool.
Fans pelted around 100 police officers with various missiles including flares.

A car was in flames near the scene of the clash as police sought to bring the situation under control.

Fears had long been raised that some Juve fans would cause trouble at the game, seeking revenge for the 1985 Heysel Stadium tragedy.

On Tuesday, police arrested eight Juventus fans for violence and possession of arms after a Liverpool supporter was hit on the head with a bat at a Turin bar.

Tempers also flared at a hotel when Juventus fans arrived, reportedly carrying bottles and a stick.

Words were exchanged, but no fighting occurred and the Juventus fans ran from the scene when the police arrived.

More than 900 officers will be at the Stadio Delle Alpi in the wake of Tuesday's fan trouble, which caused the AC Milan v Inter Milan quarter-final to be abandoned.

But Italian counter-terrorism chief Giuseppe Petronzi told BBC Radio Five Live that police were ready and prepared to deal with "the highest level of risk" in Turin.

"We have reason for concern, but I'm confident we can manage the situation," he added.

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry has already urged his fans to be on their best behaviour.

"Every fan in Turin should remember they are an ambassador for the club," he said.

But fears about the quarter-final grew after Tuesday's trouble in Milan and also when a number of Juventus fans rejected Liverpool's first-leg apology for the Heysel disaster by turning their backs on it at Anfield.

A total of 39 people died during the 1985 European Cup final between the two sides.

And Petronzi acknowledged that threats of retaliation had appeared on the internet.

"We have paid a lot of attention to what they have written and now we must see if they want to do what they have written," he said.

"I have good reason to expect that this situation will not happen and if it does, we have the proper tools to avoid a dangerous situation."
