| Post subject: | TV deal spreads out footy matches |
English Premier League football matches will no longer be shown mainly on Sky TV after a deal's been struck which means other channels get a look in too. The deal has been done between the Premier League and the European Commission, to allow other broadcasters to show live matches as well. Six TV 'packages' will be made and TV channels can all bid for them. This comes after concerns that live matches would always be shown on the channel which could pay the most money. It's also not fair on football fans who might not have access to some channels. BSkyB will not be allowed to bid for all six packages. At the moment, BSkyB owns the current packages of live matches after signing a £1.024bn deal with the Premier League in 2003. This runs out in 2007. Greater choice The European Commission had threatened to take legal action against the Premier League if it didn't agree to change the way it sold its matches. A spokesperson for the commission said the new deal would give footy fans a "greater choice and better value". Story from : CBBC NEWSROUND Published: 2005/11/17 18:30:38 GMT |
