Rugby and golf get Olympic vote

Rugby sevens and golf were today confirmed as new Olympic sports for the 2016 Games.

The International Olympic Committee voted in favour of both sports becoming part of the programme in Rio de Janeiro and in 2020.

IOC president Jacques Rogge said: "Congratulations to both federations. We all look forward to great competition in 2016 and 2020."

Rugby had 81 votes in favour and eight against, and golf 63 in favour and 27 against.

There was some opposition with Dick Pound, from Canada, arguing that the 106 members had not been given the opportunity to vote on the five sports including squash and karate who had been excluded earlier this year by the IOC's executive board.

Pound said: "The fact is we were not allowed to consider all seven sports.

"That's a mistake, it's not fair to the other five sports, and because we do not know why this was decided it is not a transparent process.

"The session was asking for guidance not a decision that would be take it or leave it."

Peter Dawson, acting president of the International Golf Federation, had to go on the defensive after American IOC member Anita DeFrantz questioned why golf clubs such as Augusta were allowed to be male only.

Dawson said: "We are aware that golf has a reputation for this but it is important to give the facts - we have 60million golfers in the world of whom 25% are women. Single sex clubs for men or indeed for women make up 0.5% and is reducing, and inclusion in the Olympic Games will further consolidate the equality of the sport."

Padraig Harrington and Michelle Wie both stressed that, given the opportunity, they would stay in the athletes' Village during the Games.

Harrington said: "I can see nothing better than being in the Olympic Village, living there and experiencing what the athletes go through. That's the highest point of the Olympics apart from the competition."

Both sports will be reviewed at the IOC session in 2017, the year after the Rio Games, before a final decision is taken that they can take part in 2020 too.

Jonah Lomu, the legendary New Zealand player, had earlier told IOC members that all top rugby players would want to play in the Olympic sevens tournament.

London 2012: One Year To Go

Wednesday, July 27 marks One Year To Go until the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games, with a number of programmes on BBC television and radio covering a day of celebrations across London, including a ceremony in Trafalgar Square organised by the Mayor of London.

Sophie Raworth, Jake Humphrey and Mishal Husain present a special programme on BBC One from 19:00 live from the One Year To Go Ceremony in Trafalgar Square and from the Aquatics Centre in the Olympic Park.

The Trafalgar Square event marks the final countdown to the Olympics and kicks off a year of outstanding sporting and cultural activity in the UK.

IOC President, Jacques Rogge, will invite athletes from around the world to put together their national teams in readiness for next year's Games. Hosted by Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, guests include London 2012 Organising Committee Chair, Sebastian Coe, and Britain's top Olympic athletes. by Laurie Hanna, Mirror

EastEnders’ Billy Mitchell is to be part of the Olympic Torch relay team – in a dramatic episode that sees fiction merge with reality.

Next July 23, the BBC1 soap will feature live footage of Billy, played by Perry Fenwick, carrying the flame through Albert Square on its way to the Opening Ceremony four days later.

Walford’s famous residents will be seen cheering him on as he passes by iconic landmarks including the launderette and The Queen Vic.

Sebastian Coe, chair of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, said: “The announcement is a great addition to the Olympic Torch Relay Route. I’m sure the people of Walford will now start planning their celebrations.

"Along with people right round the UK, the residents of Albert Square will be getting involved to make this their moment to shine."

Perry, 49, who will be one of 8,000 UK residents to carry the torch, said: "When we first discussed the storyline, my initial thought was that I'll now have to get fit.

“While this may be a fictional one-off for Billy, it’s a real once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me and I am thrilled that Walford and Albert Square will be part of this amazing event.”

The Olympic Park in Stratford, east London, will share Walford's E20 postcode after the Games.

Fenwick's character Mitchell and fellow EastEnders favourite Fatboy were nominated for one of the coveted spots to become a torchbearer - but Mitchell got the green light.

A total of 1,018 communities will be visited during the 70-day Torch relay, from Lerwick in the Shetland Islands, to St Helier on Jersey, and as far east as Lowestoft in Suffolk to Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, in the west.

It will travel about 8,000 miles and be carried by 8,000 inspirational torchbearers, London 2012 said.

It is designed to come within 10 miles of 95% of the population. It will go through every English county and every local authority area in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

On the last day it will travel down the River Thames to Olympic Park for the opening ceremony.

The episode of EastEnders on July 23 next year will feature live footage of Mitchell carrying the Olympic Flame while being cheered on by the famous residents of Albert Square.

The episode will be largely filmed in advance but several minutes of the Olympic procession will be beamed direct to TV screens around the UK live
