War veteran crosses the finish line after 26-hour London Marathon

Wounded war veteran Phil Packer spoke of his pride today after he completed the London Marathon to beat his personal best by 13 days.

The Army major, who lost the use of his legs in Iraq in 2008 but has painstakingly regained mobility, crossed the line in 25 hours and 55 minutes to achieve his target of finishing in under 26 hours for 26 charities.

He said: “Last year it took 14 days — I think you could say this is some improvement. This was tough.”

Princess Beatrice, 21 — the first royal runner of the London Marathon — entered the record books as part of the longest chain of runners to complete a marathon.

The 34-strong “Team Caterpillar” was led by Holly and Sam Branson, the children of Sir Richard Branson. The tycoon was the official race starter and completed his first marathon aged 59.
