Presenter Starts Antarctic Trek

Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton has begun her bid to reach the South Pole after bad weather had caused a delay.

Skelton will travel 500 miles across Antarctica using an ice bike, skis and a kite to raise money for Sport Relief.

In the process, she hopes to set a new world record for the longest bicycle journey on snow.

The 28-year-old will use a bicycle with specially adapted tyres with a width of 20cm (8in).

Skelton's latest adventure follows her successful high-wire walk between the chimneys of Battersea Power Station, in London, and a solo kayak voyage down the length of the Amazon.

She said: "I am desperate to get started and to get a few miles under my belt.

"Bad weather delayed the start of my challenge by four days and that means I now have less time to reach the South Pole - so the sooner I get going, the more likely I am to finish.

"I've decided to start my polar challenge on my ice bike as I'm determined to prove that you can ride part of the way to the South Pole."

John Bishop's Sport Relief Hell

BBC1, Thursday, 9pm - 10pm

Repeat - BBC1 Sat 24 Mar 2:15pm

Cycling, rowing and running from Paris to London in five days.

The lamb to the celebrity slaughter is the usually cheery stand-up John Bishop, who cycled the 185 miles from the Eiffel Tower to Calais, then after an hour’s sleep began rowing across the Channel in a boat
with Davina McCall, Denise Lewis and Freddie Flintoff, after which there was the small matter of running 90 miles from Dover to London, completing over a marathon’s distance each day.

Since his ordeal Bishop has joked about the experience: “You know how it is,” he told The One Show. “You get roped into it and after the first hour
you think, ‘Come on lads, we’ve all had a laugh, let’s go home now.’” But he kept going.

Step-by-step coverage of the comedian's recent three-part challenge in aid of Sport Relief. Setting off at the Eiffel Tower, he faced a punishing 185-mile cycle ride to Calais. But that was just the beginning. With little rest, he then got in a boat and had to row his way across the choppy waters of the Channel - with support from celebrity friends Davina McCall, Denise Lewis and Andrew Flintoff, helping to boost the sleep-deprived comic's spirits. Once in England, his gruelling journey continued with a three-day run from Dover to London - each day covering more than a marathon - again, with celebrity friends such as Dermot O'Leary, Frank Skinner, Greg James and Robbie Savage running alongside to keep him going as he headed toward the finish line in Trafalgar Square.
