ENGLAND V REPUBLIC OF IRELAND ITV Wednesday 29th May (Kick-off 8pm.) “It’s time to move forward,” says England manager Roy Hodgson. It’s a familiar sentiment in English football, which has more than its fair share of incidents they’d all rather forget. Hodgson’s suppressed history focuses on Rio Ferdinand, John Terry and the messy schism at the heart of England’s defence. With both players now retired, perhaps he really can look forward to bringing through the young blood that absolutely must see England safely through to Brazil 2014. Ireland return to Wembley for the first time since 1991, although highly rated midfielder James McCarthy will be very familiar with the stadium, having won the FA Cup with Wigan recently. England v Republic of Ireland (Kick-off 8.00pm). All the action from the friendly at Wembley Stadium, as the sides meet for the first time since 1995, when the match was abandoned due to crowd trouble after the Republic had taken a 1-0 lead. Both teams will be expecting to be able to concentrate on the football on this occasion, as they search for a morale-boosting win having faltered in their respective World Cup qualifying campaigns. Adrian Chiles presents, with analysis by Roy Keane, Gareth Southgate and Lee Dixon, and commentary from Clive Tyldesley and Andy Townsend.
