Andy Murray's first Wimbledon title has been hailed by the Prime Minister as well as stars of sport and showbusiness.

David Cameron was in the Royal Box to watch Murray's straight sets 6-4 7-5 6-4 victory over world number one Novak Djokovic.

The Scot became the first Briton in 77 years to win the men's singles final.

After the victory, Mr Cameron tweeted: "It was a privilege to watch Andy Murray making history at Wimbledon, and making Britain proud."

Murray was congratulated privately by the Queen following his historic win.

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said: "I can confirm that the Queen has sent a private message to Andy Murray following his Wimbledon victory."

Andy Murray’s set to take the bookies to the cleaners

Andy Murray’s Wimbledon win has cost the bookmaking industry a record breaking £15 million.

His emphatic straight sets win against Novak Djokovic was 11/2 yesterday morning and the Scot is now just 7/4 with Ladbrokes to retain his title next year.

The win has seen his odds of defending his US Open title cut to 7/4 with the same firm, meaning he’ll enter a Grand Slam tournament as the joint favourite for the first time ever.
