So said Peter Bazalgette At the launch of his book Billion Dollar Game Last night at BAFTA in Piccadilly.

Bazalgette joked that the progamme only got the green light because of a misunderstanding with the then Ch4 Director of programmes, Tim Gardam.
"I'm convinced Tim thought Big Brother was part of the Samuel Beckett season - What with 12 people confined in the same room swearing at each other."
It was left to ex-BB contestant Jade Goody to deconstruct the shows popularity. "Eastenders may be fun but its fictional" She told me. "Big brother is successful because it features real people and stuff happens to them."

Peter's friends
The great and the good of broadcasting turned out in force for the launch of Peter Bazalgette's Big Brother book, Billion Dollar Game, at Bafta's Piccadilly HQ last night, including Alan Yentob, Rupert Gavin, Jane Lush, Nick Bateman, Craig Phillips and Jade Goody. Three of these people appeared in a reality TV show, but can you tell which ones? Anyway, Baz was on sparkling form, imploring his guests to cough up £12.99 a copy. "People always say to me 'I wish you all the best of luck with your book, and can I have a copy?' And I say to them 'I'm sure you do wish me the best of luck, but why don't you buy your own?'" Baz also regaled his audience with a few anecdotes, only some of which had been lifted from his book. Of the three central characters in the book, Who Wants to Be A Millionaire? producer Paul Smith, Big Brother tsar John de Mol and Survivor producer Charlie Parsons, Baz said: "Paul Smith had most viewers, John de Mol made most money, and Charlie Parsons issued most writs." mediaguardian
