I have just finished Message in a Bottle by Nicholas Sparks which had an unexpected end and I am just about to start The Bookseller of Kabul by Asne Seirstad. I actually bought it for my mum for her birthday because I wanted to read it myself and asked her to give it back when she had finished it. :oops: :D

HC I read the Bookseller of Kabul last year and loved it. I read some articles last year also on the author which gave me a different viewpoint so would be interested to hear what you think of it when you are finished.

Finished it and loved it Ellie ()^ Talk about same planet different worlds! If you liked this book I would recommend you read The Bread Winner by Deborah Ellis. This is actually for young adults but is still an amazing read as was the sequil to it. It was along a very similar theme and I loved it.

I thought it was a really good book too HC. Apparently according to the family featured, the author did the dirty on them. She stayed with them and gave them a very sympathetic ear, persuading them she was on the dad's side and then didn't portray them in a way which they felt was honest. Obviously you would only know if this was the truth if you knew the family personally and it sounded a bit like sour grapes to me. I felt that the author was just trying to give an account based on her views which is fair enough imo.

BTW have you read The Red Tent?

I have read a Maggie o'Farrell but can't remember the name of it. It wasn't that one though.

The Red Tent is by Anita Diamant. It is a fictional story about the life of Dinah who was one of Jacob's daughters from the Book of Genesis in the bible. It gives a great insight into the role of women in this time in History. The tent referred to is the tent which women would use in those times during their period. It is a fantastic story of sisterhood, motherhood and betrayal. I loved it.

After You'd Gone is the one HC, but I can't remember what it is about and its not in my bookcase to recap. I must have lent it to someone. I can't remember if I liked it. Another one for the holidays worth reading HC is The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. Can you recommend any for me? I went to the bookshop the other day but nothing caught my eye, that I haven't already read.

Hunting Unicorns By Bella Pollen was a great read for me last year. Very funny and I don't normally go for funny books but this was brilliant. I have also read a lot of Nicholas Sparks. The Notebook is a great one to start with by him. another one I mentioned elsewhere The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis. Also the incident of the dissapearing dog in the nighttime. I loved because its my line of work but its also a brilliant read anyway. Enjoy :D

Thanks I'll try the Deborah Ellis one and the Nicolas Sparks. I have read the others. Have you read We Need to Talk about Kevin by Lionel Shriver.

Finished this book this morning and it was absolutely brilliant. One of the best novels I have read in a long time. ellie you were asking for recommendations well I would definately put this one on the list. For the first time in goodness knows how long I refused to get up until I had finished it. Its the first day of the summer holidays for me and I think it's allowed {@}

I'm currently reading the latest Harry Potter but I would really recommend 'Sold' by Zana Muhsen. It's a story of 2 Birmingham children who went on holiday to the Yemen, little knowing that their father had sold them as child brides. One escaped and got back home but the other is still there despite international effort. it makes me :-( but the more people who read it, the more awareness is raised.
