I've read a couple of her books, but I can't remember the titles (I'm really bad at that). I have the Blind Assassin, but I don't think I've read it yet.

Never heard of The Robber Bride, Ellie.

The Blind Assasin is brilliant I think, not as good as The Handmaids Tale but certainly worth sticking with. The style of it, is a bit complicated to start with and you are never sure for a long time, exactly what is happening but it does become clear eventually.

I've just read Singling Out the Couples by Stella Duffy
Not exactly chicklit like you might think, more a very dark, black, fairy tale about a beautiful princess born with no heart whose mission is to break up happy couples, and her brother's quest to stop her.
It sounds weird but it was really good.

I'm reading 'Last man down the firemans story' an account of a fireman working in the twin towers as it collapsed.

Now reading a book called Beneath the Cassock, the Real Vicar of Dibley, which is the autobiography of Rev Joy Carroll, the inspiration for Dawn French's character in the TV series.

It's really good - as vicars aren't normally 29, wearing boots and a short skirt! - but its also very insightful about how the Church of England went through this huge process of accepting the ordination of women (Joy was one of the first women to be ordained priest in the C of E). But it's also about her family life and her previous work on a tough estate in London. It's very good.

Where she worked is not much like Dibley, but apparently Richard Curtis saw her speaking at Synod and decided she would be a good role model - he had to ring her up several times though, because she thought it was her friends winding her up.

Just read "Band of Brothers" by Stephen Ambrose, basically how one company of Americans won WWII, despite the bungling of the british. They only started fighting in 1944, so thats quite an acheivement, that we lasted that long before the great US of A wondered in.

It is done from the soldiers POV though, so I guess its bound to be biased, and apparently the other book he wrote Pegasus bridge, about the same campaign, was told from a british regiments perspective.

If you ever get a chance to see the DVD or it's repeated on tv I couldn't recommend it more. Easy company didn't win the war but it's an amazing insight into the camaraderie and bravery that these men had. There is one episode about the battle of the bulge in the Ardennes that is particularly moving and was so well done you could actually feel you were there.

My pal went to see it and said he was very moved. I missed seeing it last week. Have you seen the film now? (If so, how does it compare with the book?)
