i've just finished reading a book which came free with a mag - Sophie's Bakery for the Brokenhearted by Lolly Winston.

Woman's husband dies young, she crashes and burns in her professional life, moves away to start new life etc. She enrols as a mentor for a teenage girl and starts to rebuild her life.

Not quite as fluffy as your usual chick lit - touches on depression, bereavement, self-harm and Alzheimers.

But, despite dark themes, it's a great book and also quite funny and uplifting.

I'm supposed to be reading The Island by Victoria Hislop for my book group now.

But it looks dull, so instead I'm reading Enduring Love by Ian McEwan. Only read the first chapter so far and it is fantastic.

Oh TD Enduring Love is a fantastic book. I love Ian McEwan. It was made into a movie which that guy who is the new James Bond, (Daniel somebody) and Hugh Grant's Welsh housemate from Notting Hill. The movie was really slated, but although it wasn't as good as the book, it wasn't bad.

I am reading mostly brochures on Agas.

I'm reading 'The Jesus I never knew' by Philip Yancey. It's not a 'devotional' book, as such (though I'll admit to reading plenty of them in my day). It's sort of 'real'. I might even post some excerpts on the other thread before I'm finished (bet you can't wait ::lol:: )

Oh, and today, I bought 'Queen Camilla' by Sue Townsend. I think her stuff is amazing. 'The Queen and I' is one of my favourite books, funny but poignant, and hopefully 'Camilla' will do the business in a similar fashion.

I've read What's so Amazing about Grace by Philip Yancey, and it was amazing.

Ellie - I loved the French Lieutenants's Woman when I was at uni.

Vagabond, I will definitely seek out the 'What's so Amazing about Grace' book, having read your comment, and also heard about it from another amazing woman. :D

I'm reading ''The Ivy Chronicles'' by Karen Quinn I tried reading it a while back and couldn't get into it but decided to give it a second chance and this time I am enjoying it. I don't normally 'do' chick lit but this one is good and makes a change from the more serious stuff I tend to read.
