I'm reading this for the second time (nearly finished) which I suppose says straight away that this is a good book.
To be honest I found the first part of it a bit mudane but onece it got to the part about the frist world war my goodness it was far from mundane.
The way Faulks is able to describe the moments in the trenches is incredible. It seems so real that one can almost imagine being there.

I first read this book because I found out that my Great Uncle was killed in WW1.
As it turned out he was actually in the very place Faulks describes in his book.

I recommend this book to anyone.

Thanks grimfandango...I'm off to buy some books at the weekend and fancy a change. (I've never read a book about war before).

As I said though do persevere, the first 70 or so pages are basically an introduction to the main character of the book.
I found them a bit dull but it's still an idea to read those pages as it kind of goes some way to explaining why he behaves the way he does.

It's an interesting read.

Birdsong is an amazing book! When I was reading it Sebastian Faulks' descriptions painted vivid pictures in my head of what it was like. It felt very claustrophobic reading about life in tunnels and trenches though.
Have you read any more of his stuff? Charlotte Gray is quite good.

I had to read it for A-Level English, but I didn't mind because it is a brilliant book.
