Has anyone read this. I've just finished it and am interested in hearing any views of it.

It is very good. It tells the story of an arranged marriage between an 18 year who has never been ouside her village in Bangladesh and a man twenty years older, also from Bangladesh but now living in London. He takes her to London after their marriage, where they live in a tower block. He is a bit of a Walter Mitty character, who has exagerated his success and continues to do so all his life. He is also a buffoon but essentially kind to her in many ways. He doesn't beat her which is what she expected and which was common in her village and they go on to have children. He is a very traditional husband and is the head of the household, or so he thinks! She is quietly subversive but openly submissive. The strenght of her character which is built up over the next 15 years is amazing and I don't want to say more, because I will give too much away. I really enjoyed it and it made a nice change to read about a husband from those parts who wasn't a complete tyrant, even though he appears to be at the beginning.

Thanks ellie, may take this on holiday with me. I think it was in Richard & Judys book club, which first brought it to my attention. Ever since then, I have seen it everywhere. Will give it a read and tell you what I thought about it.
