Post subject:  My Sisters Keeper by Jodi Picoult
I was wondering if anyone has read this and if so what they think of it. For anyone who hasn't it is a very interesting story. It is about a family with mum, dad, son and two daughters. (I can't remember the characters names and have lent the book to someone so can't check them). The older daughter is seriously ill, so the younger daughter is conceived by the parents for the primary intention of donating bone marrow to the older girl. The family is seriously dysfunctional and the mother's time and attention is totally taken up by the older daughter's illness. The older daughter becomes ill again and the mother expects the younger daughter to donate a kidney for her. It poses an interesting moral dilema and I haven't given away any of the twists. I wouldn't say it's the best written book I have ever read, but the plot is very absorbing.

I would recommend it but wouldn't recommend any others by the same author. Because I enjoyed this, I bought a few others by the same author and hated them.

well I finished this today and I thought it was absolutley brilliant with a surprising (and bitch of a) twist at the end. I liked the way it was written from everyones opinion and I enjoyed the little sub plot too with the lawyer and his differing reasons for his service dog. It lightened the tone a little which was needed.

Ellie I read Vanishing Acts by the same author and have just finished The Pact . I think there is strong similarities in all her stories and she definately seems to have a certain style that she doesn't move from (or hasn't in these three books) but I'm still glad I read them. I very much enjoyed The Pact which is the story of a teenage couple who have known each other all their lives and are very much in love. They make a suicide pact and only the girl dies and the boy is put on trial for her murder. Her books are a bit 'samey' but The Pact is well worth a read. Moreso than vanishing acts imo ()^

I may read it HC. I read Plain Truth by hers and really enjoyed the dilema's posed in the story but just found that the book was badly written and a bit sentimental and wishy washy but I think the author has great ideas.

I know what you mean about the sentimentality. I think sometimes things can go a little far fetched with her plots. However I think the interesting plot lines outweigh that. Like you say there are some interesting dilemas to get me thinking.

I have just finished reading 'Songs of the humpback whale' by Jodi Picoult. It was her first ever novel and nothing like the others of hers I have read. I really enjoyed it and I felt like she didn't cut corners at the end like she did in My Sisters Keeper. I have had it on order from the library since August and only got it this week. There aren't that many copies like with her other stuff. No courtroom drama in this one which she seems to favour in the others I have read. Anyway, I'm waffling! it was good.

I was just going to make a topic about this very book, good job you'd brought it to the top HC as I don't remember seeing it HC!

Anyway I thought 'My Sister's Keeper' was a really good book. Last year I read quite a few books but none really stood out at all but I think this will be remembered. The ending for me was 100% unexpected and it never actually hit me who... oh it's hard to explain without giving it away but yeah I have a tendancy to figure out endings really really quickly. The way in which it was written I actually found pretty clever except have an intense hatred for American spellings of words :oops:

Have to say also, the ending put a lump in my throat and I don't greet at anything like that.

I liked the concept of the book Jezi it was an interesting thing to think about but I actually thought the ending was a complete cop out. I dont want to say and give it away but I just thought that would never happen and its like when we used to have to write stories at school and we said at the end 'I woke up and it was all a dream ' because we couldnt think of anything else. ::lol::

Can see exactly where you are coming from HC but actually quite liked the ending personally as I actually kinda expected that to happen but willingly if you see what I mean - to be honest I never wanted what I thought would happen to happen though.

it is definately a very interesting storyline though and I liked the way she understood the dynamics of the family including the brother who was trying to be noticed.
