Martin bitter about dad's beatings
Steve Martin was left bitter and bruised after his father whipped him as a child.
The actor/writer/comedian has revealed all about his tough upbringing in Texas and California in his upcoming autobiography Born Standing Up.
Martin admits his violent dad, Glenn, would beat him with a belt during rages.
And there was one beating Martin will never forget: "The next day, I was covered in welts and wore long pants and sleeves to hid them at school."
The beatings continued, leading to years of estrangement once Martin left home.
He writes: "Only the most formal relationship would exist between my father and me, and for 30 years, neither he nor I did anything to repair the rift."
