It is no wonder the master playwright has had a lifelong commitment to human rights. As a boy, he was bombed out of Singapore, where his family had sought refuge after the Nazis invaded Czechoslovakia; in the Seventies, he fought for freedom of expression in Communist Europe on stage and in the street. Now he is worried about US torture in the war on terror.
