A six-week-old baby girl has been found abandoned on the doorstep of a house in north London.
A member of the public found the baby wrapped in a blanket in Thorpdale Road, Holloway, on Monday.

The baby, who has been named Christina by hospital staff, is said to be in a healthy condition.

A police spokesman said Christina was being "well cared for" but said it was "essential" they traced her mother as soon as possible so they can help her.

Det Insp Colin Welsh, from Islington's Child Protection Unit, said the woman who lived at the address discovered the baby after hearing her crying.

"There is nothing to suggest she knew the baby or the mother and it is impossible to establish whether the mother was local to the area or just passing through.

"We understand that the mother may well be frightened and distressed but we are here to offer every assistance."

He said Christina would remain in hospital until Thursday when she would be placed in temporary foster care.

oh no :( that's tragic. I hope they find her soon, the baby's mother must really need some help.

at least the baby is safe and sound, the mum could be anywhere.

I'm thinking she must have problems, I mean it's not like she harmed the baby or anything.

it's not fair to speculate cos i think there must be a girl/lady out there having a very tough time of it at the moment

theres no doubt that theres summat worng with her ofcourse she will be having a tough time but there is still no excuse for dumping a defenceless baby like that. she might not of intended to harm the baby but anything could of happened to her while she was on that doorstep.

Hi Macknesie_rose :D

I cannot begin to imagine the desperation that the mother must have felt to make her leave her baby like that. She cannot have been thinking learly at all. if the baby is six weeks and cannot be traced then I can only guess she had it alone and has been struggling to survive with it:-? We simply dont know her circumstances. Maybe she was raped and became pregnant or maybe she is very young and is frightened. My heart goes out to her she must be having a terrible time. I hope the baby is well too. I think stories like this are just tragic. :(

the way i seei t i know we dont know the circumstances around it she could be really ill but i dont think its fair to make excuses for her at the end of the day she dumped her baby and anything could of happened to the little girl. i do hope she is found and gets better for her sake but she is stil very much in the wrong for leaving the baby!

hia by the way :D

for all we know she may not have had a clue what she was doing. Obviously just leaving a baby somewhere isn't really the best way to go about it but I find it doubtful she just did it out of spite
