Often it is lazy habits doing damage. Leaving the tap running while brushing teeth sends six litres of water down the plughole; if the entire adult population of England and Wales turned off the tap, enough water would be saved to supply nearly 500,000 houses, according to the Environment Agency.
Our water-thirsty pastimes are also at fault. Watering the garden usually accounts for about 6% of the water supplied on a single day, but when it's hot this can increase to 70%. A garden sprinkler alone uses more than 1,000 litres of water an hour, enough to supply six people for a whole day.

It really annoys me when people leave taps on or half-fill their dishwashers and then moan that there's a hosepipe ban

. FFS what did you expect? One of my neighbours waters his front lawn - don't know why as his garden isn't exactly worth writing home about. I've got a huge water butt in my back garden which I bought for £10 from, believe it or not, our local water company. It collects rainwater direct from the drainpipe - it's never been empty and so my plants and shrubs don't have to drink tap-water. And my bills are low, and my shrubs are green. I'm hoping to attach a mini-irrigation system from the water butt so I don't have to keep walking round with a watering can.
