spoke too soon....just looked at bbc.co.uk......sad news:

A whale that became stranded in the River Thames has died after a massive rescue attempt to save its life.
The 18ft (5m) northern bottle-nosed whale was first spotted in the river on Friday and rescuers began an attempt to save it on Saturday morning.

But the whale died at about 1900 GMT on Saturday as rescuers transported it on a barge towards deeper water in the Thames Estuary.

It was moved after being placed in a special pontoon near Battersea Bridge.

Well that's very sad. Its a great shame when a thing of such beauty dies like this.

On a lighter note though, what do they p[lan to do with a dead four ton whale? You can't flush it down the toilet like you do with a goldfish :D

It's a real shame they couldn't of guided the whale out sooner, nature is pretty harsh, and it's very sad that it never got back to the sea.

I read yesterday that the Evening Standard christened it 'Pete the Pilot' because a) they thought it was a pilot whale and b) they weren't sure what sex it was, so they named it after Pete Burns!
(it was in the Independent so it must be true)
::lol:: ;)

RESCUERS were hit with £300 in PARKING FINES as they battled in vain to save Wally the Whale.

The team of volunteers parked their cars on meters by the River Thames in London on Saturday morning.

When the dejected group returned that evening after Wally died, they found parking wardens had slapped tickets on their cars.

Westminster Council promised the fines would be waived.

But Alan Knight, of the British Divers Marine Rescue Group, said: “It upset me. The cars had ‘Marine Ambulance’ on the side.”

Scientists thanked The Sun last night after hearing the rare whale’s bones WILL be presented to the Natural History Museum to preserve them for the nation, thanks to our campaign.

Wally mania continued yesterday as bids for a red watering can used to keep her skin wet hit £6,050 on eBay last night.
