A pray on the move service launched by British Jesuits has won the ears of thousands of commuters. Jesuit Media Initiatives launched the "Pray-as-you-go" audio downloads on Ash Wednesday.
In the first 24 hours, users downloaded some 3,300 prayer and Bible sessions to their iPods, mobile phones and other MP3 players. Since then, another 30,000 of the daily, ten-minute sessions have been downloaded.
Fr Peter Scally, director of Jesuit Media Initiatives, said "So many people have been enthused by pray-as-you-go that we are left in no doubt that it is addressing a very real need." Originally intended as a Lent-only service, the Jesuits are expected to extend it further through the year.
