Council imposes English test for cabbies after influx of drivers from overseas
Taxi drivers are to be given language tests to ensure they can understand passengers because of the huge influx of drivers from overseas.
Cabbies will have to pass an interview before being handed a taxi licence in
Swindon, Wilts., after an increase in complaints from customers.
Many passengers have ended up at the wrong location after drivers struggle to understand their English. Most of the new drivers are from Poland.
The interview will also ensure drivers understand British road rules by reading out a page from the taxi handbook and explaining what it means.
